Kari--Awesome news. I think it's amazing how many people have to worry with this issue, and yet the babies are just fine. My six year old still had the spot after she was born. We had her rechecked at 2 mths. of age. It's never caused any problems. Good luck with the remainder of your pregnancy and the welcome addition to your family. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Mina--I just found out a friend of mine is experiencing the same thing as you! Her doctor noted the spot, but did not recommend a follow up ultrasound. The local hospital informed her that they see these in about 5-6 of every 100 ultrsounds they do. Interesting! She's handling it just fine and doing great, where I seem to be worrying more b/c our doctor does want a follow up!

Hi Lorie.. Not sure if you are asking me the question. Does your baby also have dilatated kidneys? My baby is due in March 2006. I am better OK but then occa__sionally I think about the what if. I am trying to focus on the positive and praying for the best and knowing that whatever the outcome my baby will still have arms and legs and be able to play like other children. I also don't have much faith in the medical profession and feel that they are focussing too much on identifying markers that "potentially" relate to Downs Syndrome. From an economic perspective, they need people to do ultrasounds, blood tests, amnios and abortions otherwise there would be a lot more unemployed. It's almost a conspiracy!

to Laura: Yes, I feel pretty good about it. I would not worry about just because your doctor wants a follow-up, seems drs. all want to do very different things! How far along are you, and when is your next ultrasound scheduled?

Laura - October 18

I'm 27 weeks and they've scheduled it during my 29th week. They requested an estimated fetal weight as well as the heart anatomy scan. I'm interested to find out how big this baby is! This is my third, and a boy, so it seems all of this is different from before! Perhaps I can get them to give me one profile picture as well! Best wishes to you!

i just got my ultrasound today. everything was fine but my doctor said that there was a little white spot inside of my babies stomach. he said that he has never seen this before. he said maybe its a calcium deposit, but he usually sees these echogenic spots in the babies brain, heart, and other vital organs. i was wondering if anyone has any information on this to let me know ASAP. I am really really scared. I am only 25 years old

mina - October 19

good luck Laura! Let us know how it goes in a couple of weeks, Jamie, sorry, I have not ever heard of that, have they asked you to come back and recheck?

I just got a call yesterday from my doctor about the spot they found on my son's heart. I'm in my 21st week of pregnancy and I'm 33 years old. I had the quad screen a few weeks back and it was "normal." My risk of a baby with down's according to the quad is 1 in 519. That seems high risk compared with all of these postings I've been reading where people my age have much lower risks. Does anyone know why that is? Then they found this spot. My doctor said she's not worried. That it's normal to see these. That 2-3 people in every 10 they find these echogenic focuses. She said that I don't need a Sonogram II, but that she'd ssend me for one if it would make me feel better. She said that the tech that just did my u/s is prental certified and that the u/sII will not tell me anything different. They said that there were no other indicators. I;m going for the u/sII on Friday the 28th. I'm absolutely terrified. Should I get the amnio? I'm just so afraid the baby will turn out healthy and I'll have a miscarriage. My age concerns me, however. Nevertheless, reading these postings has made me fell better. It's nice to know I'm not alone and to hear how others are dealing with this.

Hi if I were you I would wait and see what they tell you at the level 2 sono I have had 2 and they are really clear and they can tell alot from them....there are alot of "soft markers" for ds and other things that they look for I know this due to my triple screen came back positve for trisomy 18 1/41 chance which trisomy 18 is really bad much worse than ds so I was scared to death as well I am 35yrs old funny thing is my chance for ds came back as 1/10000 but when they did the level 2 they found not one soft marker at all and I declined the amino due to this cause I am like you I did not want to take a risk I did not have too and they will tell you the spots are seen on healthy babies all the time with the level 2 sono they will get a much much better look at the baby and so will you!! You will really enjoy the level 2 it is nothing like the reg sono and it takes about 45mins they check EVERYTHING and if it was like mine the neonatal doctor comes in and goes over what they found and then if they find serveral soft markers you can choose to have the amino right then but I am sure you will find out good news and all is ok but I know that it is very scary I was sooooo scared you would not believe but it all turned out well and they recomended to have a follow up level 2 with me just to make sure 4wks later and I got some great 4-D pics of the baby it was wonderful to see him so clear well good luck and post back as soon as you find out!!

Meg - November 3

Hi everyone, reading all these posts just made me feel so much better. I went for U/S on Tues. and am 19 1/2 weeks and we found out the our baby boy has an echogenic foci on his heart. No other signs of anything and I will be 29 when he is born but I was completely freaking out about it. I had the quad screen drawn also on Tues after I found out about the spot and now I am living in fear of the results! I wish all of you the best and will pray for all of your babies if you could please do the same for my baby. Thanks!!!

Hey Meg, I went for my u/s last wednesday at 18 weeks and my little boy also had theat white spot on his little heart. There were no other signs or markers only the heart. The doc said not to worry about it if my AFP screen came back negative. I had taken that afp screen two weeks prior and called my doctor immedietly to find out the results which were negative. Luckily. I am 22 years old and my OB said my baby doesnt have downs so to stop freaking out about it. She said sometimes it just a calcium spot which will go away and is seen all the time on healthy babies. I will keep you in my thougts and prayers.

I am in the same situation as Patty, who started this forum. I am 37 and this is my second child. I am 16 weeks. The docotor found a EIF on her left part of the heart and I did go for the amnio. I had it done this past Monday, October 31st. So far, I am OK and so it my baby. I was scared about the amnio, but I read about it and complications are actually much less then the 1/200 previously predicted by doctors. The niddle was very thin ,and the procedure lasted less than 5 minutes. My aminiotic liquid was nice and clear. Please PRAY for a normal amnio result and that I don't develop any complications from the procedure. May God bless all your babies.

mina - November 4

to ana claudia; thinking about you. please let us know about your amnio results.
