First Visit Possible Fibroids No Heartbeat Via Doppler

I am 34 (now 10 weeks pregnant), we have a 14 year old daughter, and I will be 35 at delivery. LMP: 1/7/06 Due Date: 10/14/06. I haven't been pregnant in 15 years. I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago (at 8 1/2 weeks), she said my uterus was enlarged- size of a naval orange, that I may have fibroids and that she wants me back in two weeks (this week) to try to hear the heartbeat with the doppler, which could not be detected at that visit, and schedule an ultrasound if the heartbeat is not heard at 10 1/2 weeks through doppler. (I have a book that said my uterus should've been the size of a grapefruit at that time, so I am confused). Nervous that she wants me back in 2 weeks rather than the usual 4, and am somewhat suspicious that fibroids could be diagnosed (potentially) based on a rather quick physical exam. Also was disturbed at first visit because of the age *35* it seemed I was bombarded with paperwork scaring me about all the risks now that I am at an "advanced" age. Also, she did not suggest twins, or any reason other than fibroids for the so-called enlarged uterus. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or can comment about this situation at all. Thanks.

Can you get an earlier sonogram? I get an internal sonogram every visit and can see the heartbeat which is very comforting. I am not sure if it is unusual not to hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks through the Doppler. I am also due in October, the 10th.

well I am not sure about the fibroids but I was 35yrs old when I had my 3rd son in Jan of this year, I was 34yrs when I got pregnant and turned 35 a couple of months after and yes they can scare the c___p out of you telling all the risks but my little guy was born 1/11/06 and is just perfect so hang in there and good luck!!

Hi, I was also 34 when I concieved and 35 when I delivered (5 weeks ago) and I was already diagnosed with fibroids prior to the pregnancy. My uterus is "normally" the size of being 3 months pregnant. I carried my baby full term and she was 9lbs 2oz. Depending on where the fibroids are located you can have a perfectly normal pregnancy. Your doc should have you get an u/s not only to diagnose the fibroids but also to see the baby's h/b. This was my 4th baby and let me tell you all the rules change once you hit 35 (my last baby was when I was 31) it's amazing the stats that they can throw at you for complications due to "advanced materal age" (which is a term that you will be sick of hearing by the end of your pregnancy) My doctor could not find the heartbeat with the doppler at 10 weeks and I don't even think we heard it until I was around 13, but if your doc suspects fibroids I would push her to get you in for an u/s. That way they can hear the h/b (and see it) and also make an accurate diagnosis of fibroids. Did you have heavy periods prior to your pregnancy? This is usually a sign too. I'm just re-reading your post and your uterus being the size of an orange doesn't seem like it should have raised any flags with your doc. Is this a new doctor for you? Try not to stress, it sounds pretty normal to me. Take care and let us know how you make out, good luck:)

I called the doctor this morning and requested an ultrasound, which they will do at the office this Wednesday afternoon. Better than waiting for her to decide when or if to do it, I think. I have had nothing unusual before or now that would indicate fibroids to me. New doctor's office, more experienced doctor seeing me this week. Will update Wednesday afternoon, hopefully with good news. Oh, and unless something really unusual comes up, I am opting not to do any invasive procedures relating to my age. Wonder if that is a common choice by women my age. Hoping for a heartbeat . . . .

Update: Yes, thank goodness! All went well! The young doc scared me for nothing - ultrasound done, no fibroids/tumors, baby found and heartbeat seen! Says I'm 10w6d and baby is 10w1d. Doc couldn't find heartbeat with doppler, but doesn't matter because I saw it today! Thanks for posting, haven't told friends or family yet - need someone to tell - : )

I see that everything is going well for you. Guess I should have scrolled down to find that out before I sent my two cents. Maybe my info will be informative to someone who reads it. Congratulations!
