Hernia While Pregnant

No, I don't have one of those girdle thingies, but I've been wondering about it. No doctor has mentioned one yet ... I bet it would at least help with the coughing and bending over.

Oops - the message was FROM me TO Michelle.

Brachah, it is nice to have a surprise after a rough pregnancy. Do you have names picked out? Your girls must have some good ideas. We are totally stumped for boys names and are having a difficult time agreeing on a girls name. I am in even more pain tonight and I took it fairly easy today. Does tyleonl do anything for your pain???? I prefer advil but the dr said not to use it after 24 weeks and I am just there.

I'm twelve weeks today. This is my sixth pregnancy. I have big babies and I think that is part of the problem. I have a diastasis that extends from my rib cage to my pubic bone. And there is a good two/three inche split above my navel. I try to eat small meals and avoid ga__sy foods because it really hurts sometimes. My doctor hasn't given me much info. I don't want a mesh repair. I want someone to sew my muscles back together (and a tummy tuck would be nice, too ;-) so I could have a waist again!

Yes I have the same problem.I am 33 and I'm 18 weeks with twins. My hernia is very painful. It causes me to vomit and I'm unable to eat. This is my third pregnancy and My first time with this problem.I'm using a maternity belly strap over my belly b___ton it helps temporarily. I've been to the doctors and I was told you can do anything until after the baby is born and the pain gets worst the father you are along. Good Luck at the doctor's on Thursday.

Hi Jessica! I am almost 27 weeks preganant with my fourth little one. I can't imagine having a hernia with twins! I use the belly strap but I only find it comfortable for very short periods. Some days I feel great and other days I am doubled over throwing up from the pain. I am having a c-section and there will be two surgeons there, the OB for the section and the one to repair the hernia with mesh. Good luck with your pregnancy!

jessica - June 30

Hi Tesh, I'm glad you responded. I heard about the mesh but i don't know to much about it in detail. Maybe you can feel me in. My family always tells me that I'm throwing up because I'm pregnant but this is my third pregnancy and I know the difference. I was throwing up long before I was pregnant and had an appointment for surgery but found out I was pregnant so it was postponed.I'm a__suming you have an umbilical hernia, Does your belly b___ton form into a large knot? Mine does and when it's not to sore I try to push it back in. Sometimes I'm successful other times I'm not and it hurts like hail. There has to be some temporary relief. I have another 5 month's to go.

Hey everyone. Had another round of Dr. Appts yesterday. One was that Level Two US with a high-risk specialist, and we couldn't stand the suspense ... found out we are having another girl!!!! My internal incision is getting bigger and I am in more pain ... doctor finally mentioned that Belly Cradle belt for me to try ... and, oh, also found out that they decided NOT to do the repair immediately after c-section because of the high-risk of excessive blood loss and infection ... in other words, they want me to heal from the c-section and then have me come back in three months later for ANOTHER major abdominal surgery ... WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT I WANT TO BREASTFEED?!?!? I have so many questions and I get frustrated that these doctors seem to have their minds already made up on what they want to do when they want to do it and how they want to do it ... if it needs to be repaired (which it does) I don't understand why they won't go ahead and do it when I am already wide open on the table. Tash: Are your doctors still planning on doing the repair on the table immediately after delivery?

Tash - July 7

Hi Guys! Brachah, Congrats on having another girl! That is SO exciting! Your girls must be so happy!!! The OB I saw said they would do the hernia with the mesh at the same time as the c-section so I would have both surgeons there... I see the other surgeon on the 12th to confirm. I am afraid of what your Dr told you! I can't imagine having another surgery with a baby (and my other 3 to look after). AND how would you nurse? My first hernia repair was reopening my scar (not through the scope) and it was a very painful recovery. I will let you know what this DR says. My GP said they would do the surgery in the normal operating room rather than the smaller operating room they use for c-sections???? I can't imagine living with this pain after they are going to open me up right over the hernia anyways!!! My Dr gave me T3's for when the pain is really bad, normal tylenol does nothing. What did your Dr say to do for the pain? I am now 28 weeks and it is already getting worse. I am hoping for some good news on the 12th and will keep you updated. I feel cranky right now as it is really hurting. I hope you find some relief!

I am 33 and 30 weeks pregnant with my first child and have just come out of hospital for an operation on an incarcerated umbilical hernia. Hvae just started looking on the Internet for information on it, cos my operation was performed as an emergency. The whole affair was very scary - the main risk being that I would go into labour from the surgery and the baby would be born at 30 weeks. I seem to be further along than you other ladies here and am worried that the scar from the operation might open up when I give birth, which is not so far away. I live in Israel and am now on home rest for 10 days after the operation. I have been told that the operation wont affect whether I have a natural labour or a C-section, but the baby is also breech and I have a feeling she wont turn round and am expecting to do a Caesarean.

I'm 23 and very pet_t with my first pregnancy my baby was really big wieghing in at 8lbs 7 oz. I too got an incisional hernia, got it repaired 10 months ago, but I just found out I have it again and I am also pregnant with twins I'm very scared. It still is not hurting but what are the recomendations according to your expirences. I'm very frightened.

michelle2 - July 26

Hi Itzy, The only recommendation that I can think of is to take care of the problem as soon as possible. I'll explain why. I am now 12 days after my operation and the wound still hasn't sealed. It only measures about 3cm - there was one internal st_tch and five staples outside to help seal it. The problem, I guess, is that my tummy is simply too big and stretched already due to the baby and therefore it is hard to seal it. I am also worried that I will only have about 8 weeks of it being sealed befor the birth and therefore I am worried it might split open then under pressure, or affect whether I have a natural birth or C section. Therefore, if you have the chance of getting the hernia seen to and the wound sealed before your tummy faces too much pressure, then I would certianly ask your doctor if that is wise. I was terribly worried that it would affect the baby - but it didn't at all. good luck!

ARC - September 8

I just found out i'm pregnant and did not expect it. I have an umblical hernia that hasn't been bugging me for a while, but I am scared that it will be painful or even worse, that I will have complications further along my pregnancy. Has anyone had this problem, and if so, how did things turn out for you?

Brachah - September 9

To michelle2: How are you? Have you had your baby yet? To ARC: Since you say you are newly pregnant, talk to your OB/GYN about this situation upon your very first visit. Pain and discomfort increase with your growing baby ... I am now 30 weeks and on bedrest. TASH: ARE YOU OUT THERE IN CYBERSPACE? CHECK IN AND LET ME KNOW HOW YOU ARE.

Tash - September 9

Hi Brachah!!!!! Good to hear you are still okay! What has your Dr said? How are you feeling... what are they going to do and when? I have 2 henias now as I tripped running after my little one and I am suppose to be on a modified bed rest (as much as I can get with 3 kids :-) ) I had an amnio monday (36 weeks) but the lungs were not developed. I have another amnio on the 14th and if the lungs are ready I will have the section, hernia repairs and my tubes tied on the 15th. I am in so much pain now I have my little one started at a daycare down the road this week, I was a mess. let me know how you are doing and what your Dr said! I have been wondering how you were coping!

Brachah - September 9

Gee, Tash, it has been a long time, huh? I am so sorry. Well, I am now on bedrest, too. I am 29+ weeks and have seven weeks to go ... been to the L&D twice to monitor Braxton Hicks (which causes a lot of pain because intestines are in the way and get squeezed in and out of the rip that continues to tear) ... anyway, I chickened out and found out we are having ANOTHER precious baby girl. I am really spoiled in the US department ... get a Level II every single month with that high-risk specialist. Still not able to take anything for the pain, just lots of rest. Been sewing a lot to keep myself from going insane. Ride around in those motorized scooters when I HAVE to go to the store (Hubby takes me) ... found out they have decided to do the repair immediately after they deliver c-section. You better let me know how it's going for you!!!!!!!! I'll keep you in my prayers. (brooke@bitstreet.com)
