Pregnancy Symptoms Worse After 40

I am 47 and experiencing the gamut of symptoms; nausea, food aversions, tiredness, gas , some cramping and now having night sweats. I have done 2 EPTs and they are a BFN so far. I didnt have any of these during my first pregnancy over 20 yrs ago. Has anyone experienced this?

I am 43 and I dont have much sickness but the cramping yes, night sweats yes. They say it isi normal, and the more kids you had the worse it is, this is my 4th, and I have not had a pregnancy since i was 30.

Julielynn..it is possible that what you are experiencing is not pregnancy but the early stages of menopause. I am so sorry. Perhaps you are testing too early but I would contact your doctor right away. Also, sometimes we want it so badly that we develop psychological symptoms.

Hi Julielynn, I'm 37 and have never had any children before but I am 10 weeks pregnant now. I'd say that you were one of those very lucky ones to not have any of the symptoms that you're having now during your first pregnancy. I have all of them, nausea, food aversions extreme tiredness as well as gas and cramping. I sweat sometimes at night but also get heated during the day. Are you testing too soon? I'm not sure about reliability of early pregnancy tests. I used First Response Test but I waited until about 4 days after the day I expected my period to come to take the pregnancy test. Maybe you should have your Dr's office do the pregancy test for you.

I was just going to let it go but it is really bothersome when people are so blunt and insensitive. To suggest that you're probably already going through menopause AND to go even further to say that your pregnancy symptoms are not real and just psychological is a bit harsh and unwarranted. It may be that Ruth was trying to be helpful but still the combined comments are a bit insensitive and not even responsive to the question being asked. Again, I'd say have the Dr. do the test. There are reasons other than menopause why the test would be negative: 1) you're testing too soon; 2) defective test; 3) you didn't do the test properly or 4) you didn't check the results in time. I'm sure there are others. Having a Dr's office do the test cuts back on possibility for error. By the way, I've read that even if menopause has begun you still ovulate and can still get pregnant. ***Let us know how it goes Julielynn.

Hi julielynn ... How are you feeling today : )? My opinion.... : ) forget about all the HPTs & EPTs for a while. I know it's really hard, waiting ... to test again(I agreed with mmelo in one of my other post .. I testaholic too, I did 6 opk this month). Go with your feelings .... stay positive : ) : ) : ) I've got a girlfriend, she had her daughter in her 40s : ) : ) : ) God will give an answer. Take care & God bless.

Julielynn: how are you doing?

I a__sume it is infact a stage of menopause..... my co-worker is currently experiencing this kind of feeling but she's not pregnant and she is on her mid 40's. Your pregnancy is just a coincidence of your menopause..... be strong, you can handle it.

Hi i thought id write in as you all seem so friendly.... I have just turned 45 and my husband 44...we have been trying to concieve for over a year with no luck. HOWEVER today i am 17 days late and have had 6 negative tests up to 25th April. Ive never been like this in my life! The only time i have been late was when i was preg. My stomach is bloated and some mornings i feel terrible nausea, headaches and nasal congestion. Has anyone ANY ideas to this "strange" situation please? Id love to hear from anyone. xxx-xxx

Silentwish, with those symptoms, I'd be rushing to my Dr's office for help in figuring it out. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer. Doesn't sound like you're testing too early since you're more than 17 days late. Don't give up hope though, I know a woman who had been trying to conceive for years. After consulting with fertility specialists, several miscarriages and another year of no positive pregnancy results, she threw away all her tests and thermometer and gave up at the age of 46. Then the very next month she became pregnant and now has a healthy little boy! I wouldn't a__sume menopause at all. Isn't the typical age for menopause somewhere between 51 and 55? Of course it can happen sooner for some, but we all go through stages in life were our hormones change and go out of balance, maybe this is one of those stages but I wouldn't automatically a__sume menopaouse is the answer for either you or Julielynne. BTW, a woman is not in menopause unless she has stopped having a period for a full year. Perimenopause maybe (it can begin in a woman's 30s) but that means you can still get pregnant since you're still ovulating. Also, as far as I know nausea is not a symptom of menopause. Good luck and if you don't mind sharing your progress and what you find it I'm sure it will be helpful to the rest of us.

Thank you ever so much Perl, you have NO idea just how much your post has helped me. xxx-xxx Ok... I went to my Doctor today and he asked me to go back tomorrow morning for blood samples he is ALSO hoping we have a positive. :-) Btw.... i DO get weird bubble like feelings just more or less by my ribs and nearly always in the same place. Ive had kids before and i KNOW how stupid this will seem but... it actually feels like "something" is there and i know its not gas. Just writing that then felt so daft but im being honest with you all, i just felt it then and it reminded me. Weird. Ive been reading up on twins too and people can have rapid weight gain AND "feel" movement earlier than with a sigle pregnancy, which is interesting. Or maybe...im just plain and simply going round the bloomin twist and having a phantom pregnancy....How nice! Lol

Silent_Wish - May 3

Hi well i have been to the surgery again this morning and have had the blood tests done... now i have to wait til Friday for the results and ive still not started a period so im still hoping.

Perl - May 3

Hi Silent Wish. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping with you too!! So let us know how it goes on Friday, okay? Elsewhere on this website (I think under the "first trimester" posts), I have read other women asking questions about having "vibrations" or "flutters" under their ribs too. So it's not too too weird since other women feel it also. I don't remember anyone giving them good answers to explain and most people guess that it's gas but I think we all know what gas feels like--it's unmistakable. Good luck!

Silent_Wish - May 4

Lol....Thanks Perl and yes of course i will keep you posted there must be others somewhere going thru the same thing and hopefully my experience will help them too. :-) What our bets that the tests wont have arrived back on time tho? Lol THAT really wouldnt surprise me. Im half tempted to go buy another tester but..... nah i will wait besides ive got you all here to keep me sane...thankfully. xxx-xxx

Silent_Wish - May 5

Hi all, well as expected test results are not back yet. Been told they SHOULD arrive at the latest TUES. Today im 21 days late...still tempted to go get a tester tho..... these past few days ive had terrible tense feelings in my calves and slightly swollen ankles and fingers. Today isnt as bad but get tingling in the back of my legs , im also getting downhearted coz im convincing myself im gonna get another NEG. Hope you all have a good weekend...love and baby dust to all.xxx-xxx

Silent_Wish - May 5

Um.... okay...so i got a stores own brand and tested AGAIN AND..... negative!!!! thats the 7th time now...:-( blood tests due mon or tues. How can i possibly expect it to be a positive? Any thoughts please?.

Perl - May 8

Silent wish how are you feeling today? I know this is easier said than done but try to put your mind on something else for a bit, there doesn't seem to be much that can be done until you hear from your doc about test results. What a pain it is waiting isn't it? You should also address the swelling and tingling with your doc. Still keeping my fingers crossed. : )
