Do You Have Baby Names Now

I didn't have a name for my first baby until a week before his birth. They say name has effects on one's personality. How do you get your baby names?

DH and I each wrote down a few names we liked and then we decided on one of the 2 names we had in common. The we used his Grandpa's surname for a middle name.

My husband picked out the girl's name and I picked out the boy's name. We are having a girl, so she will be named Penny Hope. My mom always wanted to name me Penny, and my hubby loves that name, and Hope is my middle name, my mom's, her mom's, tradition. I like having her name because then we can call her by her name as apposed to baby or sesame (which is what we called her before we knew she was a she).

We actually picked out names for our kids while we were still dating...lol We're dorks. Anyways, when we actually got pregnant those names still felt right and so we stuck with them. He'll be Evan Oliver, had he been a girl it would have been Zoey Lynn.

the social security administration has a list online of the most popular names registered w/them, by year and gender. we went thru them a few months ago. i believe the name affects the personality too. our criteria: (1) not too stuffy (2) not too trendy (3) common enough for everyone to know how to pronounce (4) no names that my relatives have - b/c in my culture it's considered rude/disrespectful to 'steal' someone's name - first names are viewed as very individualistic and personal. by contrast everyone has the same middle name. (5) no names w/negative connotations to us - i.e. 'all the ppl named xyz i ever knew were jerks' - this took out all ex-bf names too of course. (6) we wanted a name that felt mature and responsible, solid and professional. (7) no names starting w/ 'J'. for some inexplicable reason my SO doesn't like them (I do!). we found a first name that we think hits all these. i don't call the baby by this name yet tho, not out loud anyway, so i don't jinx anything. no middle name yet, but two in mind. i've also been secretly considering using my SO's name. he suggested it wistfully for a first name but i vetoed b/c i thought it was too stuffy. but it'd go well as a middle name. plus it'd give the baby the opportunity to be a jr if he wants, ha, and maybe silence the critics who disagree w/me about the baby having my last name instead of his dad's.
