Intense Sharp Abdomen Pains

Hello everyone. I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with my third child and writing because I've yet to experience anything like this in either of my previous pregnancies. For the past couple weeks I've been getting pains in one spot -- about 4 inches above my belly button, in the center of my abdomen. To me, it feels like the baby is trying to burrow a way out of my stomach at that spot. Up until now, I've assumed it was the position of the baby causing the pain, but now I wonder if perhaps it's not something more, such as a hernia or some other problem. The pain occurs mainly when I stand, but also when I sit straight up. It does not always occur when I sit up, but it almost always occurs when I'm standing for more than a few minutes. When I stand, it feels like the baby (or something) is trying to bulge out. The spot is very tender to the touch, and I get sharp stabbing pains (not cramping) in that single spot. I can relieve the pain by reclining back in a chair, which seems to take the pressure out and push everything back in where it needs to be. After reclining for 5-10 minutes, the tenderness to the touch is gone, as well as the sharp pains. When I stand up again, however, the pain is quick (if not immediate) to return. The pain usually starts after I've been on my feet for 10-20 minutes. Last night I was trying to cook dinner, and found myself with an arm around my stomach, trying to keep pressure on the area and essentially pushing the protruding area back in. The pain was really intense last night, I could hardly make myself do what I needed to so that I could take a minute break from cooking to recline back. Up until last night, I assumed this was the positioning of the baby, and I haven't felt the need to mention it to the doctor. But now I wonder if it's something else. Does anyone have thoughts or experiences to share? Thanks!

I am now almost 40 weeks pregnant, and I had this about the same time. I would say it started around week 29 and lasted for 3 or 4 weeks. I don't know what was causing it either, but it was in the exact spot that you describe, and it was so tender! This is my 2nd pregnancy, and I never experienced anything like it with my daughter. If its the same as mine, it should get better soon. Sorry to hear you're so uncomfortable! I never did ask my midwife about it, so your doc might have some more insight...
