Do you always have blood in the mucus when your mucus plug breaks. I had a mucus stuff starting yesturday but no blood. I'm 37 weeks and dilated to about 2 1/2 as of this past monday. Any info would be helpful!!

Deb, no, there is not always blood in the mucous. Often the mucous plug comes clear, white, or eggshell color and stringy over several weeks. As you get closer to deliver you may also notice more of a clump of snotty looking stuff. This can be yellowish, or depending on the amount of blood in it a brownish or red streaked color. As missy asked...it happens when your cervix begins dilating and thinning or effacing. Your mucous plug can also be dislodged during an internal exam near the end of pregnancy (if you don't deliver in day or two it reforms).

I am going through the same thing right now. I am due this monday, and I lost my plug on wed morning...but I havnt gone into lobor yet I dont think..I keep getting little pains, but my tummy gets rock hard..Im not sure if that is contractions or what...the Dr. told me I should go anytime now but Im just sitting here waiting....someone said that the plug would reform if you dont go into labor within a day or two is this true????

I am also almost 36 weeks pregnant. I had a tiny spot of blood this morning too. I'm trying to get ahold of my doctor's office, but I'm really not too concerned. I just a__sumed it was my mucus plug. Iv'e read that you can lose it up to 3 weeks before you go into labor. Does anyone know if that's true? I'm afraid of going into preterm labor.

I lost mine yesterday it was a going mess of brown blood and then I had some brown discharge this morning. I am 39 weeks 1 day. My sister in law said once she lost hers she always went within a day or 2. She has 3 kids.

Seem to me you just lost your mucus plug and it mean that you could go into labor in a couple of days, hours or weeks. I'm 39wks and haven't lost my mucus plug yet. This is my third pregnancy and I didn't see my plug with my first but with my 2nd the day I went into labor is when I lost mine. Since I haven't lost mine with this one seem like I wont see it until I go into labor wiht this baby to.

you are both right. it is your mucous plug which causes your cervix to thin. So all and all it is the same thing.

Generally, when you start to efface and dilate parts of all of the plug will start to be lost. The mucous plug does regenerate yes, and if part of all of it is lost it often will reform, yes. however, when you're that dilated you may only notice mucousy discharge and no chunks, or you may notice bloodtinged chunky mucous, ect. everyonce in a while. Anything is normal in that sense, don't worry.

I'm 36 week approx. and I have had thinning of my cervix which looked like a blood-tinged white mucous, my doctor told me it wasn't anything to worry about until you start having contractions or start pa__sing alot of blood which would be losing your membranes. I'm getting a little anxious however now because he also told me i could be in pre-term labour does anyone know if that is a typcial sign of preterm labour?

I've heard that sperm is a natural thinning agent to cervix when you get close to your due therefore to have lots of s_x leading up to your due date. My husband had a vasectomy so would this still hold true for us? I'm 39 weeks along and nothing seems to be helping this baby to come out.

Deb- is this your first baby?? Also, for some of you gals.... (May be TMI) I am curious as to how you know the difference between the mucus and s____n.. if you don't see blood that is. A day or 2 (sometimes even longer) after intercourse you can pull out a string of s____n within you, around your cervix. It can be roughly the same color and texture of the mucus.... so, what is the main difference?? Other than the obvious (blood)??? Deb- I would think that pehaps its still good to have s_x regardless of a vasectomy... did he get it right after you found out your pregnant?? I wouldn't have my hubby do it until the baby is in my arms. Anyhow... yea, I think it should still be OK. I think they still release the hormones, etc. within it... with or without sperm. Not 100% certain... if you find out from your doctor, please be sure to post. Good luck!!! ALso, good luck on your labor. Sure hope its soon and easy for you!!

I am 40 weeks. and I had something come out.. I had my membranes stripped yesterday and I bled yesterday and brown today.. tapering off.. at around 3 pm. I had a lot of clear gelatin with red blood.. quite a bit.. I have been having irregular contractions.. from 20 minutes to closer to 10 minutes apart.. the hospital said to wait till it is at least 5 minutes apart and then I can come in.. I am in agony.. and not happy.. why do I have to wait so long?? I'd rather go now..

Daniella - March 15

JulieB- Good luck!! It will be over before you know it..... Hope all goes well!!!

I WENT TO THE DOCTOR 2 DAYS BEFORE THIS AND SAD I WASN'T DILATED ...HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE? AND MY HIPS AND BACK HURT BADLY AND IN THE FRONT IT FEELS LIKE MENSTRUAL CRAMPS.
