Hi, please can anyone advise me about shingles and pregnancy.
My 12 year old son got diagnosed with shingles today and Im currently 27 weeks pregnant, Dr advised me to contact midwife but have been unsuccessful so far. What can happen to me or my unborn baby? Is it very dangerous? I have never had chicken pox or shingles before. All advise would be gratefull and thankyou in advance

You might want to google this topic or talk with your dactor but I was watching a TV show called "The Doctors" the other day and I think it is a bit dangerouse for a pregnant woman to get shingles BUT if you have never had Chicken Pox you cannot get shingles! You might have a chance of getting the Chichen Pox though and I dont think that it too dangerous. But ask your doctor if that is true

You cant get shingles, but if you have never had chicken pox, being around someone with shingles can give you chicken pox which you can transmit to you unborn baby. Not trying to scare you just to give you the facts...

First off wow, I thought I was on that shingles island all by myself. and I am soooo soo sorry for your son, that is a HORRIBLE sickness and for a child to be dealing with that, I can't even imagine, They say it is some of the worst pain you can be in. Now to why I say I thought i was the only one, when I was just 2 months pregnant with my first DD my husband came down with this mysterious sickness, there was this rash on his side (only on one side) and it was spreading, finally after he couldn't take it anymore, and the pain set in, we went to the Dr at an urgent care facility (his Dr couldn't see him for 3 days) and instantly that Dr diagnosed shingles, I pulled the Dr to the side and said OMG what do I do, I am 2 months pregnant, and much to my surprise the only answer he gave me was- well its too late now. That was it... I was crying and shaking and so upset (it took us FIVE years of trying to finally get pregnant and here I thought it was all over) my husband as wise and patient as he is said to call the Dr from my gyno on call at the hospital, so as I waited the 10 mins for him to answer the page and call me back I got MORE and MORE paniced...and then this man called, a calm voice and very sure of himself explained that since I already had chicken pox, I was fine, and the baby was safe because my immunities to it were protecting her, and that shingles isnt contagious (meaning you dont catching shingles from some one with it you can get chicken pox if you haven't had it but you cant catch shingles) apparently it is a virus that stays in your spine once you have had chicken pox and it can lay dormant for your entire life, or it can come out when your immune system is low and your stress is HIGH like way out of control high (my Hubby was freaked over how to deal with a new baby and money issues since his work was cutting people left and right so the stress opened him up to getting it) I think maybe your son might be having some issues that brought this on, like fear of this new baby taking some of his attention, or taking away mommys love so you might want to sit down with him and explain that, that will never happen.... to help ease his mind (or it could be something else that has triggered his stress but for a child so young to have the amount of stress to lower his immune system enough to make him suspetiable to shingles needs his mom to help him out children dont know how to deal with stress) and PLEASE know that I am in NO WAY telling you how to parent, I am sure you are a wonderful mom, I am just suggesting things that you maybe didn't know (because before the Dr explained how you get shingles I thought it was just caught from someone else who had it, I had no idea it came from stress oh and it follows a nerve system so thats why the rash only follows a weird path)
The incubation period for chicken pox is 10-14 days after that you would begin to exhibit signs (small blisters filled with water that pop and release a small amount of fluid if you scratch or pop them) they will spread, usually start on your trunk (meaning back and stomach) but dont freak out until you are sure (pregnancy can cause body acne and stress of thinking you can catch chicken pox can bring on more acne) so until you get a diagnosis from your DR dont panic... and like i said shingles is NOT contagious like that, it leads to chicken pox, NOT shingles, like suggested until you can talk to your midwife google it, (also for tips how to help your son deal with the pain if it has started yet) and exactly what it means if you do get chicken pox, you can also call the hospital and ask to speak to the dr on call, (the ob on call and ask them if you can wait there is always an OB on call 24 hours a day)
keep us posted, and stay calm i know that is hard to do, but try
