Subject: Fw: Hand Sanitizer & young children
But I verified this with Snopes.com and it is true.
This apparently happened in the Tulsa area.
Ok. I don't know where to begin because the last 2 days of my life have been such a blur. Yesterday, My youngest daughter Halle who is 4, was rushed to the emergency room by her father for being severely lethargic and incoherent. He was called to her school by the school secretary for being "very VERY sick." He told me that when he arrived that Halle was barely sitting in the chair. She couldn't hold her own head up and when he looked into her eyes, she couldn't focus them.
He immediately called me after he scooped her up and rushed her to the ER. When we got there, they ran blood test after blood test and did x-rays, every test imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal, nothing was out of the ordinary. The ER doctor told us that he had done everything that he could do so he was sending her to Saint Francis for further test.
Right when we were leaving in the ambulance, her teacher had come to the ER and after questioning Halle's classmates, we found out that she had licked hand sanitizer off her hand. Hand sanitizer, of all things. But it makes sense. These days they have all kinds of different scents and when you have a curious child, they are going to put all kinds of things in their mouths.
When we arrived at Saint Francis, we told the ER doctor there to check her blood alcohol level, which, yes we did get weird looks from it but they did it. The results were her blood alcohol level was 85% and this was 6 hours after we first took her. There's no telling what it would have been if we would have tested it at the first ER.
Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools have taken this out of the classrooms of all the lower grade classes but what's to stop middle and high schoolers too? After doing research off the internet, we have found out that it only takes 3 squirts of the stuff to be fatal in a toddler. For her blood alcohol level to be so high was to compare someone her size to drinking something 120 proof. So please PLEASE don't disregard this because I don't ever want anyone to go thru what my family and I have gone thru. Today was a little better but not much. Please send this to everyone you know that has children or are having children. It doesn't matter what age. I just want people to know the dangers of this.

Wow thats insane I give my ds the hand sanitizer from Bath and Body all the time -you know the grape scent. No more for us!!

Scary. I've always been afraid to put any on my kids for that reason! The part in the article was a little silly though about middle and high schoolers. I would think they could figure out not to lick their hands!

I accidentally tasted hand sanitizer once and it has a horrible taste. I can't imagine you'd want to purposefully lick your hands.

yeah I agree I have accidentally tasted it before too, it is gross. My kids have accidentally stuck their finger in their mouth, after it was dried, and they thought it was gross too.

Thanks for this. I e-mailed it to everyone. I have an almost two year old that i use it on all the time. He has a blood disease and we have to try very hard to make sure that he doesn't get sick, so i use it a lot.

Wow! I will definitely bring this up with my Director. I work at a daycare center and the kids will use the stuff after we have a pet visit or such. Yikes. I'm glad you're daughter is okay, though!

the same goes for mouthwash - my boss son was 3 years old, and had swallowed a bunch of mouthwash. They didnt know at first, and when he was unresponsive, they rushed him to the e.r. . From there, the E.R. took him to a childrens hospital, and while they're running a bunch of test and fixin to do a ct scan, my boss (this was almost 20 years ago when this happend, I didnt know him then) was walking down the hall and just happend to read a poster on the wall with the t_tle "Did you know?" and it listed common household items that can make your kids ill. One of those items was mouthwash, and he then remembered that morning that when he walked into the bathroom, his son had the bottle of mouthwash in his hands, and as soon as he saw his dad he put it down real quick. I've never thought about it - so I'm glad this was brought up!

Wow. You just never know about stuff like that. The gym daycare my kids go to puts it on them... I think I will be taking this post to them!

Ok, very interesting email, but I think the woman my have her numbers wrong. There is no way someone could have a blood alcohol level of 85%. Here is an acohol level rundown I found on a website: .02 MELLOW FEELING. SLIGHT BODY WARMTH. LESS INHIBITED.
05 NOTICEABLE RELAXATION. LESS ALERT. LESS SELF-FOCUSED. COORDINATION IMPAIRMENT BEGINS.
.08 DRUNK DRIVING LIMIT. DEFINITE IMPAIRMENT IN COORDINATION AND JUDGMENT.
.10 NOISY. POSSIBLE EMBARRASSING BEHAVIOR. MOOD SWINGS. REDUCTION IN REACTION TIME.
.15 IMPAIRED BALANCE AND MOVEMENT. CLEARLY DRUNK.
.30 MANY LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS
.40 MOST LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS; SOME DIE.
.50 BREATHING STOPS. MANY DIE.
