Scared Of Shadows

Just this week my 20 month old ds became scared of shadows. We've always had a nightlight in his room and now he points to the ceiling and cries at the shadows. It would be way too dark to take the night lights out so what do we do???

I'm having the same problem with my 3 1/2 year old, she has always been a good sleeper and in her own bed and room since about 14 months, but in the last couple of weeks she says she doesn't want to go to sleep and that she is scared of the shadows! I really wish I knew how to deal with this! If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them and I'm sure sonya would too!

Sonya and socalmom, I would try talking to your lo's and try to find out why. I've found that usually there's a reason why they all of a sudden become afraid of something. Someone has said something, or they saw something on tv, or any number of things. Usually you can talk them "down" if you know the true problem. Also, try a shadow spray, a spray bottle of water with a fragerance added. Tell them that it won't spray the shadow away, but that it will spray it's scariness away. It turns it into a "good" shadow. Or try naming the shadows and giving them good personalities. Or for a while you may have to turn the light on and leave it one for bedtime. Lo's fears are valid to them. I know they seem irrational and ridiculous to us but you have shrink down to their size and imagine, what if you were them....I hope I helped a little. ps, I speak from experience. LOL! My dd will be 9 Sunday and has been afraid of everything at one time or another. :O}
