Hi ladies, i am currently 16 weeks pregnant with twins and have been reading Dr Luke and Tamara's book on multiples. Unfortunately, I really do not have the appet_te needed to fulfil the weight gain eating req. esp. the amounts. I am worried cos even thinking about that much food DAILY makes me wanna gag. sometimes am hungry and sometimes am just not that hungry. what do i do? will this improve? i have really never been a food person pre-preg and i try to eat healthy as much as I can..please offer any experiences or suggestions. I take my prenatals too. Belly rubs to all!

Drinking Ensure or Carnation Instant Breakfast is a good way to get in some extra calories if you're not gaining enough. Does your doc say your weight gain is too low? Dr. Luke's book is great but lots of docs think the weight gain she recommends is a bit excessive. I followed most of her advice too, but could not gain because I had GD. As long as you're eating a balanced diet and not losing weight, baby is growing, etc you're probably fine.

I only gained 32lbs with my twins. I suffered from sickness until about 16 weeks and that was immediately replaced by terrible heartburn. Then it was the summer and it was too hot and I was too fat to even get the energy to make food. I had a lot of instant breakfasts. Just eat small more frequent meals and you should be ok. If your dr isn't concerned you don't need to be.

I disagree about the weight gain guidelines in Dr. Luke's book being excessive - but I am carrying triplets. I think it's important everyone talk with their doctor about weight gain. The extra weight - put on early - is PROVEN to help premature babies (with supertwins especially) gestate longer and be born with higher birthweights. So, again, I'd suggest talking to your doctor about the requirements to determine what is best for you and not count on forum commentary (my apologies, but I do think this is important and should be determined by your doctor). My Peri, who is quite world renown, swears by these requirements and has a great track record with higher birth-weight babies. That being said, the requirements for twins are not as stringent. As for the lack of appet_te, I have had the same issue. For some reason, just this last week, things have started to improve - though I don't know why. Maybe that will happen to you (I am 17+ weeks along with trips. However, the Ensure Plus drinks and milkshakes or smoothies with pure protein powder (I use something called Designer Protein in Vanilla that I get at Whole Foods - s/b available at any health food store) and that will help. They pack a high-cal, high protein punch. Just be careful to not do more than two ensures (before speaking with your doc) a day as you want to watch particular vitamin intake (this is why pure protein is good - no vitamins so you aren't overdoing it). Also, high cal, high protien foods like cheese are great! Try to have a few cubes every hour or so...that will help keep blood sugar up.
