hi moms and moms-to-be, I am 22 weeks pg with frat twins today. However for a couple of days now, I have been having tightening in my lower abd region i.e below the belly button. i guess these are contractions, hard to tell too. they come in waves and last about 10-15secs tops. midly painful. i usually have them one per day. yesterday, they were more than that, maybe 3-4. Naturally , am freaking out. So I called my doc, he was very vague about explaining what was happening. He is also closed today. Has anyone had this? Is this normal?? what exactly do I do now, cos I worry if I may be dilating or effacing etc.. please respond asap. Honestly, I have been slacking off on my water intake, but I picked up yesterday. Could I be dehydrated???? Please Help!!!

I have heard that dehydration will cause these symptoms and can cause contraction like pain. My doctor is always saying be sure to drink more water than I think I should. I'm 21 weeks with twin boys. Sometimes I feel tightening in my lower abs. I think that’s it more like round ligament pain than a contraction.

It sounds like braxton-hicks contractions. Your abdomen tightens up and your belly goes into a point and then releases. Though it can be uncomfortable, it should be pretty painless. It is just your uterus practicing for what is to come. I had them with all my pregnancies but with my twins, I had them since around 5 months. Annoying but normal. If they get painful or more than I believe about 4 an hour, call the doctor.

Dehydration can definitely cause you to have contractions, it's very common in the summertime. It happened to me and I took 2 bags of fluid in the hospital before they stopped. make sure you keep drinking your water. If you have irregular contractions drink water and lie down on your left side until they stop. If you start getting regular contractions less than 10 minutes apart for an hour or more you should head to L&D (or at least call) to rule out preterm labor (this were the instructions I was given after I was discharged) It's normal to have some contractions (braxton hicks) but when they start forming a pattern it's a good idea to get it checked out. Good luck, and drink your water!!

Freebird is right... I had the same thing start at 21wks. Unfortunatly by 24wks my cervix had shruck. Be sure to get any unusual symptoms checked out. The ER is always open! You don't want to get dehydrated. Drink lots of fluid even if you end up spending most of the day running to the bathroom. It's better than ending up in preterm labor!! Good luck.

Thanks ladies! sorry to post and update so late. my contractions ended up being braxton-hicks as I was so worried I had to go to the ER. They asked me to increase my water intake which I have stepped up. I still have them though but i just monitor them for frequency and look out for a pattern. Apparently they are quite normal at this stage of the pregnancy. They are still sporadic and last the same time etc. One time I went for a whole day without any. I am hoping everything stays the same or even better. Im 24 weeks now. Goodluck to all of you and thanks again for posting!!

I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with twin girls and I have been having braxton-hicks contractions for several weeks now. Lately they have been more often but it has been really hot out. Like the rest of the ladies have said here - rest, and drink lots of water. My doctor also advised me to take tylenol as well. She said that with twins you tend to experience these sooner and can be more often with twins as well. Good luck!!

I always say if you have some time to get something done like the dishes or lie down, then lie down. Listen to what your body is telling you.
