I started to bleed last Sunday. I was right at 7 weeks. We went to the emergency room and the ultrasound showed two sacs and my cervix was closed. I did not bleed at all Monday, spotted Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and this weekend. I went back to DR. on Wed. and they said there is only one sac now. They did not answer any of my questions. If this has ever happened to anyone else please let me know how long am I going to bleed. I do not have any cramps or pain. Thanks.

Does the remaining sac have a baby with a h/b?

Hi. They did not tell me if they saw the heartbeat. The ultrasound technician was probably not allowed to say. Is there a chance?

By 7 weeks they should see a heart beat. If the sac is empty, then it probably is a blighted ovum where a sac develops but a baby doesn't. The body doesn't realize there isn't a viable pregnancy, so it continues to produce HCG and the sac sometimes continues to grow. I have had a VTS (vanishing twin) at 11 weeks and had the bleeding which stopped after my body absored the baby that didn't make it. I also have had a blight ovum that was discovered at my first appointment at 9 weeks. The empty sac was measuring at 7 weeks but they wanted to make sure I wasn't behind on my dates, so they let it go until about 11 weeks and when there was no change, I had a D&C, I hope that all is well with you and that there is a baby in there and that the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful.

Going from date of last period I was 7 weeks. I guess really only 5 weeks gestational. Please let me know how long and how much your bleeding lasted (how many days). Did you have any pain? I am sorry to hear that this happened to you too. It is so crazy to try so long for a baby and this happens. Thank you for your well wishes. I also hope and pray there is a baby still there. thank you for answering too. Baby dust.

They date on the u/s from your last LMP (last period), so that should be the same as your due date. With the VTS, I bled heavy red blood for an hour and then spotted for a day or two. Then it happened again a week later but it was just bright red spotting every time I went to the bathroom. With the blighted ovum, I only had brown spotting with it. Most of the time with VTS, there is no bleeding, the baby or sac just vanishes and if not for early u/s, the mother would never know there was more than one baby for a short time. With the blighted ovum, I felt like something bad was going on. I didn't have cramps but I lost my morning sickness and my sore b___sts and I knew it was too early for that to end. That usually goes away after 12+ weeks.

Thank you. It really helps me to hear your story. I am afraid that the same thing is likely happening to me. Would the ultasound that I had on Wed. show the blighted ovum? I still have not heard from the DR. about that. I called the office on Friday and everyone was gone. The ultrasound tech just said wait and see.

The blighted ovum would basically just be the sac with nothing in it. The only thing you can do is wait and see what your DR has to say. If you are off on your dates and are only 5 weeks at the second u/s, then there would be just the sac and not much else or mabye there was a h/b but the tech didn't or couldn't say anything to you. Some techs are like that and some DR's require it. I have no idea what is happening with you but having been on pregnancy boards and twin boards for 5 years now, I have seen many scary situations turn out fine in the end. I sure hope you get answers soon.

Thank you for the rea__surance. I should hear tomorrow about the Wed. ultrasound. The wait is killing me. I am still bleeding too.

SAMEHERE, I wanted to let you know that I lost the other one too. It was the worst day of my life. I keep telling myself that there were problems from the beginning, etc. I thank you for posting. I will keep you in my prayers.

I am so very sorry!!! I lost a set of twins. The first twin was to VTS at 11 weeks and the surviving twin I lost at 36 weeks due to an umbilical cord accident. I now have another set of twins that just turned 4 years old. I hope for you to hear the pitter patter of little feet very soon. I am so very sorry for your loss.

vanishing twin syndrome, is very common. Most ppl don't know there was ever twins, others do. Science doesn't know exactly why it happens, but about 1 in 6 ppl had a twin that vanished. discovery health channel did a special on multiple births, called Inside the womb, if you can you should check it out. very much worth it.
