I have no idea. I have acrylic nails and I'm 8 weeks along. Does anyone know if the chemicals in the acrylic are harmful????

I got my nails done for my wedding when i was 14 weeks. They say they are safe. I asked the person doing it to give me a mask though like they wear so that i didnt breathe in the smells....

Getting your nails done is completely safe while pregnant. I turn on the fan for good ventilation so I don't inhale the fumes.

I would be more cautious about acrylic nails, considering they would need to be redone more often, and the fumes in nail salons are often pungent. I would take advantage of the stronger nails you have while pregnant and forgo the acrylic nails, or wear a mask at the salon.

Those masks do nothing about the vapors. They only keep out the dust. If you don't want to get your nails done while pregnant, then just think of the nail salon technician when she is pregnant and has to spend 8 hours per day, 6 days per week working in those conditions. Don't you think the ventilation system in nail salons should be better? Would you be willing to pay a little more for a manicure to help make up for the expense of a ventilation system? It would help the pregnant clients and employees.

I HAVE HAD MY NAILS DONE SINCE I WAS FIRST PREGNANT I AM NOT 29 WEEKS AND EVEN THE DOCTOR SAYS THERE IS NOTHING IN THE SALON THAT CAN HARM THE BABY JUST BE WARE THAT IF YOU GET YOUR NAILS DONE WHILE PREGNANT YOU HAVE TO GET THEM DONE MORE OFTEN DUE TO THE FACT THEY GROW FASTER. I WEAR GEL NAILS AND I LOVE THEM. I WOULD NOT BE CONCERNED ABOUT THAT WHILE YOUR PREGNANT YOU HAVE A LOT MORE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT. IT IS SAFE I PROMISE....

Ladies, I am a certified Nail Technician, and have been for almost 5 years. I would like to stress that true "gel" nails are fine. There is no evidence of any kind that there is harm to you or your baby. If you have true gel nails, (which must be cured under a uv light-also of no harm- often, and not just the last coat.) don't be fooled by people selling "gel" nails, that are really acrilic.Good quality acrilic is also safe. I need to stress though, that "discount' salons, where there is a strong odor, is not the safest choice for you OR your baby!!!! Ventilation systems are in place at most quality salons. If you enter a salon, and there is a strong, chemical odor, they are most likely using MMA, or Methyl Methacrilate, which is a harmful substance when used on your nails... but it's cheap. Discount salons use it, and it's illegal to do so, however, there is not enough 'bra__s' to enforce this, so these salons often slip through. A great rule to follow is "If all the employees are wearing masks, leave!" Pay a little less for a manicure somewhere else, or go to a reputable salon, where you can see your nail tech face to face. They are not wearing the mask for 'dust', it is because MMA causes severe health problems when breathed in. Also remember, you get what you pay for! Be educated about what you are paying for! Great websites (that are meant for nail professionals, but you can still learn from) are nailsplash.com, nailpro.com, nailsmag.com and follow links within these sites as well. There are always stories about 'discount' salons and their practice. Again, GOOD quality Gel, or Acrilic nails are fine, BUT YOU need to know the difference!!!! Do you? I mean, really, wouldn't 'Mcdonald's' tell you their food is just as healthy as home cooking? You need to be educated!!!!!!

I think it's ok to get them done when your baby is one month old

christina r - March 8

it is not good to get them done through the pregnacy

Rachel - March 18

I am also a qualified nail technician, and I can also confirm that there is very little health risk with proper gel nails or good acrylic, but MMA is a harmful substance. However, if the nail technician is wearing a mask this is not necessarily a sign that MMA is being used. I choose to wear a mask myself while working, as do most of my colleagues. My mask covers my mouth and nose and filters the air I breath to some extent, and I choose to wear it because I am exposed to dust and strong odours for long periods of time and it is more comfortable for me. This does not mean the substances I use are harmful, and certainly not for short peiods. If you feel uncomfortable in a nail salon I would recommend you do ask the technician for a mask to put on, but it is not essential and in normal circ_mstances it is perfectly safe

im in my ninth month and my doc still says its fine for me to get my nails done!

Theres still fumes and anything that strong seems harmful. What you breathe your baby breathes. Would you let a newborn sit in a room full of fumes like that?? I would hope not!!

I'm currently being trained to be a professional nail technician. I just asked my instructor about working throughout my pregnancy...she said she knows a few nail techs who did nails durrign their pregnancies. If your so concerned ask your doctor. But really it's not as big of a deal as some women think. Just think though, if it's okay for a nail tech to do nails for hours and hours a day then you obviously wil be fine for getting your fills every few weeks. and I won't repeat it all but i agree with these other posts by nail tech's.

I am confident that not enough testing has been done to confirm one way or another if these fumes are harmful to professionals who use them--let alone pregnant women. For that fact alone, I think I will be bypa__sing this trivial vanity.

Hi, I was online and researching if acrylic nails were safe, i came upon this article and read it. I really want to get acrylics but My mom said that the substances in it can lead to cancer if you get acrylics to many times, just to let you know. Or you can have a liver problems.
