Birth Controll Pill And Pregnancy

I have been on the pill for a while now, however I am over a week late for my period. I took a home pregnancy test and it was negative. I have not missed my period before so i am concerned about starting my pack of birth control pills. If i am pregnant will the birth control pills have a negative affect on the fetus???
