My doctor advised me to give my 4 1/2 month old son a small bowl of rice cereal mixed with br___tmilk before bed because he was still waking up about 4 times a night to eat. He really seems to love it & eats well from the spoon & when he's finished the bowl I top him off with some more br___tfeeding. Anyway, he still wakes up 2 to 3 times a night to eat, & I think I should be giving him maybe 2 bowls a day since he's still so hungry. But all the books & info on the internet says you shouldn't feed solids be3fore 6 months. I'm worried that feeding him more cereal might be too much for his little system, though I'm sure he wants more. At what age did most of you start feeding your baby cereal & how much? Anyone else have babies that still get up to eat this often at 4 1/2 months?

some doctors say it is ok to eat solids earlier than others i was told 3 weeks of cereals then veggies and fruits at my daughters 4 month check up. you could try a little more cereal at the time you feed him or gerber's rice cereal made with the ingredients of formula otherwise if you are ok with it top him off with formula instead that might fill him up you could also try oatmeal (if you can give your son rice it should be ok) if you give him rice cereal 2x a day maybe try the first time he gets up at night

I was told by doctor that you can start feed cereal around 4 months. Just make sure that you do not put the cereal in the bottle. My doctor said it is a choking hazzard.

I have 3 daughters, my baby is 6 weeks old, all of my children were given cereal at 4 weeks, I started it with my first due to reflux(it was prescribed by our pedaitrician) and she was fine!! So when the 2nd and 3rd came along I did not hesitate. My 6week old now eats 2 tablespoons mixed with 4oz of b___stmilk at 12 am and sleeps until about 6am. I have given cereal to my children both out of a spoon and out of a bottle, my kids never choked. Anyways everyone believes something different and I am sure there will be alot of neg. posts about me after it write this, but I have 3 wonderful daughters and there is absoultley NOTHING wrong with them. Hope this helps!!

I started my son at around the same age (5 months). Rice cereal is the best to start them on. I gave him a couple of tsp's to start, and increased it to suit what he wanted to eat. (I like Milupa cereals. It already has formula in it, so you mix it with water.) He is 10 months old now, and still wakes at night. Sometimes b___stfeeding him is the only way to settle him down!! I try to only feed him once at night. It can be a challenge, but I always tell myself that he won't be doing this forever!! Hang in there!!

My son is five and a half months and started cereal at four month. He eats about half of a jar of
del monte rice cereal with applesauce and half a jar of vegitabes later in the day. he still wakes up four to six times a night.

Is it possible that he's not actually hungry when he wakes? Have you tried subst_tuting a pacifier for the b___st when he wakes? My daughter has never woken up that often at night, but I've been told that I was blessed with an angel (which I was) - but maybe try not feeding him one of the times he wakes up at night, but just offer him a pacifier.

Rice cereal (oatmeal and other cereals are not supposed to be introduced until at least 6 months) is okay at 4 months and so are a few fruits and vegetables. My son started on rice cereal from 4-5 months and then at 5 months I introduced stage 1 food waiting 4 days between types to test for food allergies. I only fed my son solids once per day and now at 6 months he gets 1-2 x's per day and I'm starting stage 2 foods. Anyway, I've read that your child should get most of their nutrition from b___st milk or formula until 6 months. At that point they need more iron than your b___st milk can provide. From 4-6 months it's kind of like a learning process for them to eat from a spoon and try different foods. I believe as long as your child is getting enough b___st milk feedings during the day you could give him another serving of food. My son started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks so I didn't stress about it as much as you are. I can understand your stress because those first 6 weeks were hell and my son only got up maybe 2-3 times per night. Are you feeding on demand during the day with b___stfeeding? I found that if my son ate his recommended amount of food during the day, that's when he started sleeping through the night. Other things I did that I think helped was before he slept through the night I didn't let him nap longer than 2-3 hours during the day. After that time I'd pick him up and hug him, change his diaper, and put him to the b___st. My son is also in the 95 % for weight and height so I think that helps too but that is kind of out of your control. You could also express some b___st milk or use formula to feed him once at night. Bottle feeding is a lot faster so you could get back to bed sooner. Good luck.

Jamie-all of us have been blessed with Angels. It doesn't mean they're not if they wake at night. They could be teething, or have colic.

We wouldn't trade them in for anything but I'm sure Mena would like to get a little sleep someday soon. Mena, did you try a second feeding? Did it help?

I didn't mean to imply we're not all blessed. My daughter has slept through the night since she was 3 weeks old; she is incredibly easy to take care of, very laid back and forgiving - that is all I meant by me being blessed with an angel.

Thanks for all your advice. I gave Carter a second bowl at noon & then another around 7.00 & put him to bed at 9.30 ish. He still wakes up at least twice but I don't think he's as hungry because I just talk to him quietly & run my fingers through his hair for a few mins & he usually falls asleep after that ... I'm thinking it might still be waking up out of habbit. I tried the pacifier thing & he hates it & I still have to nurse him once a night, but at least it's not 4 times anymore. At least I know I'm not the only one with a baby who still won't sleep through the night!

That's wonderful that adding more food helped. Sometimes my son will wake up early and I will ignore him for a good 5 minutes and he'll fall back to sleep. I only get up right away if he's screaming. As we do a baby will wake up a few times a night and need to learn how to put themselves back to sleep.
