Sleeping Through The Night And Engorgement

Ben slept at least 6.5 hours last night and probably would have gone longer if I didn't wake him. His doc said that at this age it is ok once in a while if he slept longer. If I had let him go longer, like 7-8 hours, would I still have had to wake up sooner and pump to prevent engorgement and a possible plugged duct and mast_tis?

Nah...probably not...as he starts sleeping through the night more frequently, you'll be engorged for the first 2 or 3 nights and will probably wake up dripping...but your body will acclimate, and will stop having a letdown at night. If you want to get up and pump, go for it, but you don't have to, and most likely won't develop any issues - it's a natural part of the baby getting bigger.

christy jasmin has done this everynight almost since birth, i thin once your body gets used to it it should be fine, however if ben usually fed every two hours in night then you suddenly started sleeping through you might get mast_tis

Nah- he's been gradually sleeping longer, so I think I will be ok. Thanks for your responses.

my baby is 3 months and has been sleeping thru the night for about a month she goes down at 10 and awakes at 7am. It is wonderful, I am very full when I awake in the morning and sometimes I have leaked a little, but I just pump right away and I hv never seemed to have a problem. Congrats on the sleeping!!

Yeah, I wouldn't pump, either. Your body will just continue to make the extra milk and you'll have to wake up to pump every day! You deserve the sleep!
