My sister has that problem with her teflon pots and pans. She also has well water with extra iron. Could one of those be the culprit?

I have the same problem with the powder. I used to boil my sons water and I started buying the baby bottled water instead. I now steralize in the microwave.

It's calcium in the water you're using. If you use bottled or filtered water, you'll eliminate the problem.

It's lime. Use bottled water.

Medela makes these AWESOME bags for sterilizing b___st pump parts, bottles, binkis etc. in the microwave! You just put the pieces in the bag with 2 oz. of water... then microwave for 3 minutes and voila! They are so great and each bag can be reused up to 20 times!
