Hannebelle is now eight weeks old, and she has been exclusively br___tfed since birth ... no "foreign" nipples ... how in the world can I help her get used to a pacifier?!?!? She gags and chokes and screams every time we try ... I've bought every kind, size and shape of pacifiers available in my county ... I hate to admit that I am finally getting tired of being her personal/private "suck" buddy ... ha-ha (sigh)

Hi, Brooke! I have a similar issue with Ben and I have givien up on the pacifier thing. I will admit that I didn't try that hard, though. One of the other women suggested dipping the pacifier in gripe water, as it is sweet and is known to ease colic. I have no idea where to get gripe water, but it is worht a shot if you can get some. How is Hannebelle otherwise?

Hannebelle has been absolutely precious lately. She is sleeping more comfortably and for longer periods; and she is alert and responsive and smiling; and the extreme fussiness has disappeared. My grandmother died, and we had her funeral/burial New Year's Eve and it was a literal all-day affair ... Nani (Hannebelle) was perfectly adorable ... she slept through all the major stuff, and cooed and looked around during the family meal at the church ... she dozed on my shoulder as I stood before the congregation and sang a song ... but, alas, the constant sucking is starting to wear me out. I can't get her to take a pacifier to save our lives!!!!! This baby girl LOVES to suck!!!!!!

Brooke- I'm not sure, but a lot of the Brits recommend it. i think you can buy it online. Not much help, am I? LOL! Glad to hear all is well with Nani . :) Ben is still on the fussy side. I don't think he is sleeping enough, so I need to start putting him down earlier. Wish me luck! BTW- HEY- it looks like we're starting a Topaz reunion! How are you, kimj?

My little boy really like the Nuk pacifier (the one I got in the hospital.) I also tried other pacifiers but he seemed to like that one the best.

Although it is "recommended" that dummy is better than thumb, a few friends of mine found that their baby would not take a dummy and so they guided the babys thumb into its mouth and the baby was perfectly content to suck on that instead! And as for problems with teeth moving out of shape due to the thumb sucking, I was advised by my GP (when I worried that my boy would be a thumb sucker - he's not - LOVES his dummy) that since your permanent teeth don't arrive until starting at about 4 years of age and babies usually drop thumb sucking by that age, it is rarely a problem.

I think gripe water is just plain water with sugar in it.

Gripe water is a sweet 'medicine' that is really helpful for fussy babies and babies with gas. i bought mine at the drugstore in the baby aisle. you could ask your pharmacist for it if you can't find it. my daughter didn't like it too much at first but now we can use it if she's really peeved to calm her down. just dip the end of the pacifier in it or you can give it to them by dropper.
