Hyperactive Letdown

i was wondering if anyone here has had problems with hyperactive letdown. i'm not sure if i have hyperactive letdown but i think i might. my babies diapers have all been green, poop that is, for at least a week, i forget how long. when i nurse alot of the time she'll let go for a minute and i'll spray milk uncontrollably everywhere. heck sometimes, if i just brush against them they'll spray. i change my nursing pads multiple times a day because they'll be so sopping wet that they don't help at all and then my shirt will be soaked. i have to change them in the middle of the night or else i'll "wet the bed". i already only nurse one br___t at feedings. my baby, however, wants to nurse all the time. anyone else here have any of these problems? do you think it's hyperactive letdown? any suggestions of what i should do?

You should consult your doctor. You'll probably feel better if you nurse your baby on demand. Feed often and from both b___sts. Burp her in between feeds, so that she takes a lot. You can try pumping when you are not feeding her.

Sounds like everything is pretty normal. You will be more comfortable if you use both b___sts at each feeding. Start each feeding with the b___st you used second for the feeding before. That way you will get things evened out. If changing pads is bothering you at night you might try either putting cut up layers of cloth diapers in your bra, or sleeping with a folded towel under you. As the baby gets older the leaking should slow down. Do be sure to air dry your nipples and not let them stay wet all the time. Make sure that you are nursing the baby whenever it cries or nusels and not making it wait for a scheduled time. Also let the baby nurse for as long as it wants and don't make it stop before it stops on its own. Keep a cloth diaper with you to catch the spray when she pulls off. Let her continue to nurse after pulling off if she shows interest. She may just be coming up for air.

How old is your baby? I had this same problem for the first month.. my letdown was just so plentiful that it gagged my poor DD! My doc suggested pumping FIRST, get past the initial huge letdown, THEN feed my daughter.. That worked very well for me! Eventually, in the 2nd month, everything evened out. I wouldn't be worried, just let your lactation consultant or doc know to double check.

my baby is 5 weeks old. i guess i was the most worried because of her poop being green all the time now. and i do feed on demand, sometimes i'll nurse her like every hour, and i let her nurse however long she wants.

oh and thanks for all your help!

green poo is nothing to worry about. The color will change with your diet.. just wait till ! Luck to you!

I had that problem, too - I only nurse on one side at a feeding, because that's all she ever wants; what you can do, to make sure your baby gets enough hind milk, is pump for a few minutes before putting babe to the b___st, to get rid of a little bit of that foremilk.

Oh yah! Now is a great time to pump out that excess and get it stored in the freezer for the future...my daughter's almost 4 months now, and while I was a cow at the beginning, able to pump 10+ ounces per side AFTER my baby nursed, now I have a hard time pumping 3 ounces while my baby is nursing...so it takes me all day to pump enough for 1 bottle. So, pump a bunch now, before your supply cuts down to just what your baby consumes.

I also had this problem, so bad sometimes I would cry b/c my dd would get so upset w/ the flow(mine flowed to fast through the whole feeding) it was a nightmare. I got help at kellymom.com. They have great b___stfeeding advice from experts! What worked for me was to do block feedings. Nurse on one side for several feedings(depending on how often she wanting to nurse that could be just 2 hrs or maybe 6). It took a few weeks for it to help. But it does get better. Also like Sophia said burp her often!
