A Good C Section Experience

When I was pregnant with breech twins I read a lot about C-sections and was PETRIFIED for mine. So I just wanted to share my story for anyone who is afraid for theirs because I had a great experience. I was 36.5 weeks with twins and got pre-eclampsia so they took the babies that night - the surgery prep wasn't bad and during the surgery itself I felt a lot of pulling and pressure, but you are so excited to see your baby/babies that it goes by quickly. I felt no pain, just pressure. When the boys were born they placed them on my chest for the entire rest of the surgery. Nothing hurt at all and I was only focusing on the babies so I didn't care what they were doing to me. I had a catheter for the next day and it was great so I didn't have to get out of bed. After less than 24 hours they had me walk to the bathroom and I didn't feel any pain. The main thing is to keep up with your pain meds - don't fall behind on taking them so that you are in pain and then ask for them. By day 2 I was walking to the nursery (holding on to my husband, but walking nonetheless) and honestly, the only pain I had were gas pains that went away once I was able to go to the bathroom. By 2 weeks after I felt great and by 3 weeks I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I had worried that with a C, the weight would be harder to lose - it's not. It's a big surgery, but I just wanted to share my personal experience for those of you who are in the situation that I was - petrified about it. There ARE good experiences - and some not-so-good, I know, but hopefully you can have one of the better ones.

Congrats, but I think you are in the small minority of women who don't really feel pain. I haven't met anyone personally who had a good experience but I am certainly glad you did and babies are fine!

I too had a good experience with my c section. I felt pressure and pulling as well but it didn't last long. I was able to be with my little girl too as they finished the surgery; which helps takes the mind off of what they are doing. My recovery was pretty good. Like Jena said, be sure to keep up with the drugs so that your body can heal! I stayed in bed all day on the day of surgery and was able to walk to the bathroom on the second day. To me the pain felt like I had worked out too hard at the gym (the abs). I had to move a little bit slower for the first week but as each week went on, I was able to pick up speed. I am on my third week of recovery and I have been doing short walks to get back into shape. Remember to listen to your body, take the drugs, and get plenty of rest! I'm sorry to hear about those who didn't have a good experience...

My experience went well, too. Except when they made me get out of bed it was the hardest step I have ever taken in my life-but I am having another in june. I don't know of anyone personally who has had a bad one....

I hemorrhaged, lost blood pressure and vomited on the table, had to have forceps even with a c-section, had 2 of four babies in the NICU due to c-sections, had bladder, menstrual problems due to internal scar tissue, had to have a hysterectomy young all because of those c-sections and the damage they caused. I do know mine were necessary as I have an inadequate pelvis, but I guess I am so confounded as to how someone as healthy and fit as I was could have such complications...4 different doctors at two different hospitals...and not one good experience. All the best to those of you who did have good experiences (as far as surgery can be called good...LOL) and I always hope mothers will get your experiences over mine. Happy Holidays!

My csection was also pain free. I did not want the csection until I was 41 weeks, then I elected to. It was so different than my other 3 childbirths, 2 natural, one emergency c-section that I kept saying "this is so easy!" Every birth picture I have a huge grin on my face... recovery was good because I, too, stayed on top of my pain meds and am resting as much as possible, and not feeling guilty about it (baby is now 11 days old) and I went to my oldests drill compet_tion without feeling badly... hope everyone else has a smooth delivery, it really was great for me...

I am sorry, I find it incredibly hard to believe anyone with a semblence of an abdomen would say that a cesarean section was PAINFREE...that's putting just a ridiculously unrealistic spin on them unless you have that weird disease where you don't feel pain at all....I had one terrible one and one not so bad, but I certainly felt SOME PAIN...

I too, had a good experience with my first section. I had some pain if I wasnt on top of taking my meds. I will always remember by the third week I felt ready to pick up speed. I am just worried this time since I will have a one year old at home to look after as well as a newbaby.

I really did not feel pain. I have a normal abdomen and I a__sure you the worst 'pain' I felt was the iv. I would cla__sify getting an iv as a 'discomfort'. The locals for the spinal would also fall under discomfort. Didn't feel the spinal shot because of the locals. Pressure and tugging during the 10 minutes it took to get her out. Morphine in the spinal made the first 18 hours uncomfortable at best. I stood next to the bed the first day, walked around the second, released on the third. And since I was on pain meds it was just uncomfortable, and yes I was tired and yes I watched my st_tches, but that isn't an unrealistic spin on my experiences. I hope you have a good one as well. :)

I guess then, discomfort is not the same thing as low-level pain? I am confused as to what you mean unless you mean if it isn't excruciating it isn't pain. I am glad, however, that you were kept comfortable and wish everyone had that type of pain relief.

Well, when we are talking about childbirth and csections and you say paiin, I think nervous moms immediately think pain = excruciating. The whole point of this thread was to give women who are about to have csections a glimmer of hope that their experience isn't going to be the most painful and traumatic experience of their lives, albeit one that ends up with the birth of their babies. Sometimes, and it seems more frequently now, the advances in pain management make the whole csection process an uncomfortable experience, but not necessarily a painful one, that the recovery if managed correctly can be a really pleasant time with your baby and not a miserable time that many people portray. :)

Point well-taken. I agree that we have come a long way in pain management for both surgical and v____al deliveries...due to my experiences, I think we still have a long way to go. But I agree with you the end game is a healthy baby and we do, indeed, get that usually either way.
