Is This A Normal C Section Experience

I just had my twins 6 weeks ago via c-section. I was just wondering if any of you had experienced the things I did. I plan to have more children in the future but I am scared to death to have another c-section because mine was such a horrible experience. I had a spinal, and as soon as I layed down I thought my head was going to come off because of the pressure and automatically wasen't able to breathe. They ended up giving me oxygen. It helped for a while but then it got to the point where I felt like someone was standing on my chest, I couldn't take any breaths, and I kept feeling like I was going to pass out. The Dr. told me afterwords that my heart rate kept dropping. In the middle of the surgery I began throwing up and my face started itching. I ended up scratching the top layer of skin off of my face because the itching was so severe. Then I began shaking violently, and I don't mean the quivering, it was like I was having siezures. I thought I was going to die. Is this normally what happens during a c-section?

I had a lot of the same experiences, particularly the breathing problems, the vomiting and feelings of absolute suffocation. I am so glad I never have to have another c-section as long as I live. Remember, you do not have to have another section, even if the hospital says so, you can show up in active labor and they can not legally make you sign a consent for surgery. It is against the law to force you no matter what they try to tell you. Also, the risk for uterine rupture is 1% in VBAC, if a woman delivers v____ally and has pitocin the risk is actually higher so you are not doing anything out of the ordinary by attempting VBAC with your future children. This of course, depends on the type of uterine incision you had with your twins, sometimes even if the outside is verical, the inside may be horizontal and that makes a big difference on future deliveries. Best of luck and congrats on your twins!

If you ever have another c-section, you'll want to tell the anesthesiologist about the problems you had with the spinal. I had some trouble with the spinal during my first c-section, and for my second they used an epidural instead, and gave me an antihistamine in the iv to control itching.

hello...i too had problems with my first c..i could not swallow at all and felt like someone was also standing on my chest (which is normal) at least for my second one also...anyhow the spinal went to far up thats what i thought anyways,, but was later told that the spinal got into my blood stream...i could not swallow, my eyes were rolling in the back of my head, my whole body was numb even to my throat..it was awful...then i had a second c and it went fine! now i am pg with my 3rd and scared to death something will happen with the spinal....it is a very scarey thing..the second time i told the doc about the problems and he told me that if it were to happen again give him a signal and he would knock me out so that made me feel better...just make sure you talk to the doc about your concerns..congrats on the babies!

Thank you for all of your replys. I had my 6 week check up today and asked my Dr. about it. He told me the same thing that most likely the spinal went to far up. He also told me that I should be given the option to have a VBAC if I have a singleton but if it is twins again there is a greater risk for uterine rupture because of the fact that I had twins already and my uterus was so stretched out. My boys weighed 6 lbs and 7 lbs 14 oz's and they were 19 1/2 inches and 20 1/2 inches long. I am really hoping for twins again and because of the fact that I have to take fertility drugs to get pregnant I have good chances of that. Are epidurals better controlled as far as how high up they go? Did you have any itching when they gave you the antihistamine?

The epidural took longer to work...there was time to lie down on the table. I wasn't numb as far up as I was with the spinal. It started hurting toward the end, and I told the anesthesiologist and she increased the meds. The only part of me that itched was my nose, and that was several hours after the c-section, not during it. I also didn't get a spinal headache, which I did after my first c-section.

Oh, I forgot to add, by the time you get around to having your next child(ren) you will have forgotten the worst of your birth experience, most likely :-)

when i had my section they told me that i would have pressure on my chest and possibly feel as if i couldn't. i had pressure on my chest but no trouble breathing. they said you feel that way because of the numbness. i itched until i couldnt stand myself.. the spinal had morphine in it... and the headache i think is a spinal headache because i wanted to raise my head up and they wouldn't let me because you can get a headache from it and from what i've heard it is sooo painful. only part i didn't like was the numbness for hours. freaked me out. i hated it.

Hi I had an epideral and it went up into my neck. My doctor told me later that the freezing should never go higher than your heart. If you can't move your arms that is BAD!!! Otherwise I had a really good experience. I hope you don't have to go through that trauma again.

To vjr from shauna: don't you work (lol) Glad you found a new forum.

i had 3 sectfions and never experienced any of this. I did feel pressure as they told me I would whe n they took out my baby but other than that nothing. I'm sorry to hear such bad experiences.

to chem400 : I did not know that about the horixontal/vertical thing. Good to know if I end up on fertility drugs with multiples. My incision with my son was bikini line. So is the inside probably the same then?

shauna... who needs work when i can get all this good info (LOL) I'm happpy i've found another one too... I know they are on the same page but it seems like a lot of different people depending on the topic!!!

Hi Shauna, this is a time to ask to review your medical history re: the first c-section. Sometimes they need to cut to the uterus via the vertical incision for time, but can still use the horizontal for the uterine incision. It is perfectly within your rights to ask to review your chart notes about your surgery. Make an appointment with your doctor or his/her nurse to look at your history or it might be as simple as asking for the info. I was surprised at this info re: abdominal and uterine incisions myself. For some women the ab cut is horizontal but the UTERINE cut is vertical too...

Wow Chem400: well I have been TTC for many years now so I don't have to worry too much yet. I didn't even think to ask if inside was different. GOOD TO KNOW. Thanx

smjj-I had a similar experience, I could breathe fine but I couldn't focus my eyes, they kept rolling around, and I shook uncontrollably and felt like if I pa__sed out I was going to die, so I had to keep myself awake. I agree, it was a horrifying experience.
