Scared Of Spinal Block

Hi my last pregnancy ended in a c-section, so being 36 weeks, doctor is currently deciding wether or not I need another c-section, I dont find out til tomorrow. With my last c-section I was under a general, but I have a feeling that if I do need a c-section this time that it will only be a spinal block, I am scared of having just a spinal block but at the same time I dont want a general because you miss out on too much, I may not need another c-section but I jusy have this feeling that the doc is going to give me one, so my question is what exactly do you feel when having a spinal block???? some people say you feel nothing some say you just feel pressure, I am worried that when I am during the c-section I will freak out and panick. I know this might seem silly to some seen as I do not know if I even need a c-section yet but I am just preparing myself just incase I do, please tell me your story about having a spinal and what it was like.......thanks

You are not silly, it is natural to be apprehensive. Trust me, I know! I had my first c-sec after 5 v____al births, just 3 months ago! The spinal is just like getting an epidural (not sure if you've had one) but you seriously do not feel a thing after that. I did not even feel much pulling, just like someone was lightly pressing me. There is no pain whatsoever, you will not be able to feel anything from the waist downwards. Anyhow, before they start, they ask you if you can lift your feet. You won't be able to but the reason they ask is to make sure you are numb.

I had my second c-section 2 weeks ago. My first they knocked me out. That was a big mistake. This one I had a spinal and it was a piece of cake compared to the first one. Recovery was much easier too. The needle they use to numb you before they insert the spinal is very small and I barely felt it. The IV I had hurt more than anything else. But that is manageable too. The only thing that tripped me out a bit was not feeling my body from below my b___st down. That was a little weird. I did not even realize they had started cutting me. I turned to my husband at one point and said, "when are they going to start?". I guess at that point his head was being pulled out. The only thing I felt was pushing on my upper belly. I guess he was kinda stuck in there. The Dr. put a drug called deramorph(sp?) into my spinal right when he was born. It is an awesome drug and last for 24 hours. They also gave me Demoral(sp?) that made me sick. Darvaset (sp?) worked much better for me. I was able to go home after 2 days. I did not need any more major drugs once I was home. I just used advil. The one thing I would recommend though is getting yourself some stoool softeners and some Gas X chewable tablets. The gas pains can get pretty painful. With those two things I had no problem "going " for the first time. Good luck!!!!!

Oh and I was able to have my baby 10 min after I was wheeled into recovery. They had us be skin to skin for an hour before they would let anyone come see him. They also brought him to me in the surgery room to give him a kiss and take a few pics.

Well, I am afraid I don't have any encouragment. I had 2 cesareans and I dread the spinal most with the next one. I just get scared with it although it is ok after it is all over. It hurt me to get it and I did feel pressure and I was cold and shakey after it, but I do like getting to see the baby right after it comes out and wouldn't want a general due not seeing the baby and risk to myself and the baby. Wouldn't you want a spinal though even if you didn't have a cesarean? I would, but I don;'t have a choice this time. It will for sure be a reapeat cesarean. Don't worry, it goes by quickly.

Hi girls thanks for you replies, well today is D day I find out wether or not I need a c-section! Dh keeps telling me I am worried over nothing, and that the doc is going to tell me I can go naturally. Honestly I do not know what I would prefer, because there is a chance that if he lets me go naturally, that the same thing will happen as what did with my first, and I will end up having an emergency section anyway. Even if the doc says I can go naturally I am going to ask him lots of questions, because I do not want to be let go naturally if there is even a slight chance the same thing will happen, and have to go through a c-section anyway. Well thanks for listening to me, I will post on here a bit later today and let you know how the appointment went at the docs!!!! thanks

Good luck nda keep us posted! I'm a day late and a dollar short on answering this question... but my spinal experience wasn't bad. It was a small pinch... not bad at all. No, it doesn't seem silly to me, either. With my first c-section I didn't have time to get panicked about it because it was an emergency c-section, but the next two I was fine most of the pregnancy, but at the end I got really scared! My 2nd was the one I had a spinal with... my third was under general anethesia and I'm glad I didn't know it would happen that way ahead of time because the thought of having a breathing tube in freaked me out!... fortunately I didn't have long to dwell on it because I only found out less than an hour before the surgery that I was going to be under GA. Well, I'm rambling now... anyway... good luck!
