I'm 37 weeks pregnant and have been told that my baby is almost 8lbs, mostly due to a big head. One doctor doesn't think this is a problem, and another thinks we should induce on Monday. What information should I use to decide?

My advice... don't let them talk you into anything you don't want or aren't sure about because those estimates can be way off! I can just tell you that I'm not at all against inductions... I was induced with my first because of an unprogressing labor... but my experience was that it was really, really painful compared to the natural labor that I had been in before the Pitocin... I mean serious pain! You can always just let labor start and then take it from there... maybe you're body will do really well and you won't even have to worry about induction :-), but they can always induce after you go into labor on your own if they don't feel you are progressing well enough. Good luck with your decision.

I'm back lol. All that said (my above paragraph)... I should say that I found out after my first ended up being born by emergency c-section that I have scarring of the cervix and can't dilate, so I'm sure that made my induction worse than a normal one. My babies were 9 lbs. 5 oz., 8 lbs. 3 oz. and 10 lbs. 6 oz. (2nd and 3rd were scheuled c-sections)... so I had pretty big ones, but I don't know if I'd have gotten them out v____ally if it weren't for the cervical scarring... if only we could have a crystal ball to know how it will go, right?

A big head is a concern my 2nd son was 7 ibs 15 ounces and born by emergency csection and the dr had to use forceps to get him out! His head was 38 cm and I couldnt imagine the complications I would have had if I had him v____ally if they had trouble getting him out by csection. I would go for the induction if they were 100% sure that the baby had a big head. good luck

Susan, I've been told the same thing about my baby, and I'm 37 weeks as well. I have heard that inducing can be fairly painful. My doctor is taking a wait-and-see att_tude - she hasn't offered to induce yet. I'm not showing any signs of dilation or effacement, and the baby hasn't yet dropped. She said that if he doesn't really drop, that would probably indicate the need for a c-section. She's concerned that his head could come out but then his shoulders might get stuck. I'm scheduled for weekly visits with another ultrasound in 2 weeks. You may have already had your baby by now... if so I hope everything went well! If you can, give an update...
