Epidural Spinal Not Working

Hi All,
I had an emergancy csection last May. I am due for a planned one this July. During my emergancy section the epidural I was given didnt work. I remember telling the doctor that I sort of feel the pinches, well they cut into me and I litterly came off the table and kicked the doctor twice. I was almost immediatly put under. Scariest moment of my life. The amusing part was that my doctor was incrediable silly and came out and told my mother and husband in long detail how hard it was to cut a perfect line with a wild kicking woman and that he would probably have a bruise from me. My cut is actually uneven on one side. Needless to say I have a morbid fear of not being numb for this section. My doctor says that most likely a spinal will be done. And because its not an emergancy they will wait for epidural to work this time( they didnt wait due to babies stress last time apparently, thats what they tell me now) I am terrified that I will feel it again. I am also scaried of being put under. With a planned csection have any of you ever had the spinal or epidural not work? Am I needlessly worrying? My memory of the feeling I had throughout my body when I felt it is enouph to make me want to be just put under, but I so want to hold my baby right away and I want to be a brave trooper, but I need some encouragement...Let me know your ideas, experiance. thank you so much for taking the time to read and respond....

Hi Gracie, is there any chance you can have a VBAC? I don't think I would want to do it again if I had an experience like that. I had some really rough ones, but I didn't feel them cutting me, just pushing and shoving and mashing down. Try and think positive that if the spinal has time it WILL take effect, but I really don't like c-sections and if I could have, I would have VBACed, no matter what they tried to tell me. Best wishes!

With my first section it was also an emergency and the spinal did not work but they clued into that and quickly put me out before starting out. That extra time I think hindered everything although it obviously needed to be done. With my 2nd section I had a spinal block the same as my 3rd section and was fine. With each surgery I did feel weird feelings of pushing and tugging but never did I actually feel pain. When I was given my spinal blocks I was frozen quickly and couldn't even swing my own legs around to get into position on the table. they put the spinal in with me sitting on the edge of the table leaning forwards. Hope this helps. Good luck.

My experience was the same as Lovemy3. But my first was not an emergency c/s. My second was planned and was not bad. Had a spinal with both and never felt anything but them tugging and pushing to get the baby out. I can understand your concern and being scared, but it will be better when its planned. Like she said, your legs will be numb instantly and they will continue to get even more numb while they are prepping you. You will be fine. hang in there!

Hi Gracie, I had a planned c/s with my first pregnancy due to complications and my epidural didn't work that well either. I was told this is because epidural sometimes don't numb all the areas ther suppose to. I'm having a planned c/s in July with this baby and getting a spinal this time. Like you I'm scared to death. Here is my advise, try not to compare the two. I have heard alot of woman say the second time is much better and easier. Also, try talking to your Dr. about your fears, it helped me to know she understands my fears ahead of time and will try to make everything as easy as possible. Good luck.

When I had my c-section, the anesthesiologist (sp?) asked me a ton of questions about what I could feel before I was cut open. I had the opportunity to meet with the team before things started and to ask questions, and even if you don't meet them separately, you will have time to speak with them during the prep. Tell them your fears and about your first experience so that they can make sure that the same thing doesn't happen.

The same thing happened to me with my c-section, but I felt a whole lot more than just pinching! I kept telling my doctor that my epidural wasn't working, but I guess she didn't believe me, but it happens!
