Incision Opening Fluid And Blood Pouring Out

Hi Again! It has been about 10 weeks since my surgery, by about the 8th week, I was ready to open the dam thing myself and clean it out. I was putting peroxide on it, and letting it go in the hole, it never hurt, just fizzed alot. The other night, I was pleased to see that it had hardly leaked all day, so, when I went to shower that night, I saw a lime green plug (all this time it had been green and full of pus, I had two bacteria swabs sent away, and they came back negative, I was very upset) anyway, the green 'hard' plug I thought was pus that had just hardened and got in the way of letting it drain, so, dissapointed again, I pressed on it, and the 'plug' started to come out, and then it got 'stuck' so I grabbed a piece of toilet paper and pulled. It was long and kind of hard and was covered with green pus. I was scared it was like something from 'alien'. Turns out, it was a st_tch! It had been festering in there all this time causing me grief! I swear, the next day, my 'hole' healed over, and now, it is making a scab. There is no more pus, I AM SO HAPPY!! The drs kept telling me to hang in there and I did (had no other choice), but I wanted to share my story for all of you going through this too, Since I've found so little information on this. I still keep checking it all the time for leakage, I think I will for weeks yet to come. Hang in there, I think a bacteria swab is best, that way you aren't guessing if it is infected or not, Peroxide and lots of low adhesive bandages, cause, my belly is a mess from all the pulling the first few weeks of bandages did. :) Janie2

I just had to post this info after Janie's post about peroxide. Janie, I am glad you are finally healing. But anyone else going thru this, DO NOT USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. It actually prolongs the healing process because it eats away the granulating tissue (healing tissue). My OB told me to use peroxide on my open incision, and thank goodness I have friends who are physical therapists and raised an eyebrow to this advice. Using peroxide on an open wound is an very old-school way of treating a wound. If you talk to a wound care therapist, they will tell you this. If anyone else is going thru the horror of an open c-section wound, I would strongly advise you to see out a a would care specialist for help. There are specialized dressings nowadays that can speed things along. And it is a shame that our OB's (who are SURGEONS) have no clue on the recent advanced treatment methods.

Thanx Nerdy Girl! I like so many others was following the advice of my doctor. You know, I was wondering if Peroxide was best or not, but it just seemed nothing was working until that st_tch worked its way out. It gets very depressing when the rest of your body feels good, and you still have a wound to dress every day. I wish I would have known about the Peroxide earlier. What is best to use?

i have had 4 c-sections after your surgery you really do need to take it easy! the best way to heal is to keep it dry and at night put a&d ointment on it. you will be sore that was major surgery.

The wound care specialist I talked to recommended Allevyn dressings. They were amazing! They sealed up the area and promoted moist wound healing. They did not irritate my skin or pull the hair. I used one per day and even wore them in the shower. It took 7 weeks for my incision to fully close, but I bet it would have taken longer had I been using the peroxide. The only bad news for me was that I ended up with some hypergranulation (excess tissue growth) that bulged out of the incision once it closed up, since the wound had to basically heal from the inside out. The hypergranulation hardened into this big lump. My scar looks hideous and I am considering having it revised.

Hi sarah. I had no pain at all. If you take out the pain part from your story, we have a very similar problem that happened. All is the same, except my wound opened up about 4 hours after the staples were removed. PLEASE' PLEASE don`t be stupid like me. I always taught doctors(especially specialist) were so so smart and they could do no harm. Ihad my c-section 6 months ago, I live in Canada. My c-section is still not healed. If I can give you any real good AND I MEAN REAL GOOD advice it is to request a VAC right away. THIS IS THE BEST ADVICE you will get. They waited way too long to put it on me, I had the vac for 2 weeks and the progress with that thing was amazing(i lost all the deepness) now I have been waiting for the outside of my cut to close up, it`s been TWO months. What a nightmare I am in. I hope you don`t wait like I do and hopefully you have better doc than I have. The people who have seen me so far have never had this experience before so it`s a learning experience for them and for me well A nightmare. I guess it`s worth it as I have a child that I love very very much. I believe this could have all been avoided if I would have seen people who knew what they were doing. PLEASE REQUEST A VAC IF YOU HAVE ANY DEEPNESS AT ALL!!!! You will not be sorry, otherwise I would hate to see you take 2 months or more to heal. I think I`m an extreme case(6 months) as I have yet to read anyone with a c-section taking so long to heal. My wound is packed with acquacel ag or kaltostate or mesalt, they always rotate. They say they use this to avoid hyper granulation. If anyone out there has had a c-section problem for about 6 months, please let me know how you got it closed!!! Thanks

My incision reopened with DS and I had to clean it. I never had blood gushes but I did have a bit of oozing. I had to take a q-tip soaked in hydrogen peroxide and put it in the place where it reopened then push it as far left and right as it would go before there was resistance. It eventually closed but it was a little scary. I imagine you must have been freaking out!

Compress your tummy right away!! Get a large ace bandage and wrap your tummy when you are standing for at least 2 weeks!! if not a month- Watch for infection, and keep the incision clean. you probably had bleeding form one of the 6 layers that was cut, or a pocket of blood that became stagnant. Lightly ma__sage your thighs daily toward your pubic area to have the lymphatic system drain excess fluid away- keep up waterintake- but most importantly- compress and support your tummy today!! c sectionrecoverykit.com coming 4/12/08 aoha

After my third C-section, my incision wound also became infected. I was in the hospital for 5 days, and I was fine, but when I checked out of the hospital, I had a 101.5 fever, and I was peeing blood. I called my doctor, who told me to come into the office right away. My wound had not started oozing pus and blood yet, but the fever was enough to alarm my doctor. I had not had any problems with my two previous C-section, so I wasn't expecting any problems at all with my third C-section. After seeing my doctor, she told me to check into the hospital, where they gave me an IV with three different antibiotics. By then, the pain was excruciating (and I have a high tolerance for pain!). The nurses gave me Motrin to keep my fever down, and when my incision started oozing puss and blood, my doctor took out the st_tches and packed it with saline and dressing. The next day, the oozing became worse, so she put me on a wound vac. The wound vac was amazing! I could see improvement a couple of days later. If you are experiencing oozing, a wound vac helps heal your incision faster than regular wound dressings. I was discharged from the hospital and put on homehealth, where a nurse changed my dressing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. By then, I didn't need to use any pain meds. However, it was a pain to only be able to shower three times a week (usually just right before the nurse changed my dressing). Throughout the entire ordeal, I felt depressed and had a fear that I was going to die. The wound vac is portable, but it was annoying having to lug it around. Also, sometimes the wound vac would make a "burping" noise (if the dressing has even a tiny leak). Like I said, I never had any problems with my previous two C-sections, and people rarely talk about the risks of an infection. The doc said I may have had an allergic reaction to the dissolving st_tches (I had staples with the other two C-sections) or the incision may have been infected by Group B Strep (I tested positive for it during my pregnancy). In any case, if you have to go through this type of thing, hang in there! It's a rough ride and can be very painful, but just remember, that you WILL heal. Just have a positive att_tude and know that you are not alone! Also, ask your doc about a wound vac. It makes your wound heal much, much faster.

get some b___terfly stiches on the incision- wrap your belly in cotton ace bandage or something that will breathe- make sure there is no infection- do you have a fever? ma__sage your abdomen all around, but not on scar- Support you tummy!!!
