I have heard that a spinal epidual makes you feel like you are really high... this scares me because I am supposed to have on in January. I am afraid because I have epilepsy and are on meds for it, all under control and I haven't had a seizure in over 5 years.... but my fear is that the "high" feeling is what I feel when I have a seizure so I am afraid that I will freak out when I get that feeling. I hope you understand what I mean. Please advise.

It does not make you feel high. It just makes you numb below the area that you got your injection. I never felt high after I got mine. Some woman got a bad headache but that is it.

When I had the spinal, it felt like a floating feeling. Have you ever taken codeine? It's the same feeling, but about 100 times stronger. I remember thinking I was a cloud. When I closed my eyes I felt like I was in the ocean and I could feel waves lifting me up and down. I did get a spinal headache afterwards. When I had my second baby, I didn't have a spinal, just the epidural. I didn't get that fluffy, floating feeling...I just felt cold and numb and shaky.

cold numb and shaky doesn't sound very good. Thanks for your replies. I will try to think positive thoughts.

It wasn't as bad as it sounds...they put warm blankets over me and my husband held one hand and the anesthesiologist held the other. I didn't get itchy from it, but when I had the spinal it itched terribly when it was wearing off.

Michelle, did you read others who posted they got a "high spinal"? If that is what you heard, it means the medicine trraveled too high up the spinal cord and affected other unintended nerves leading to Blood Pressure, breathing, and other central nervous system controls. If that happens your surgery will be hastened, you will be given oxygen, you will probably feel like you cant' breathe and you may panic some and you will most likely vomit...sounds awful and it IS scary to be going through it, but you will ultimately be ok. Good luck. I felt other-worldish during mine and I can't say I enjoyed my c-sections very much but I have healthy children so all is ok now.

To djh...you just described exactly what I experienced when I had my spinal. It was a scary feeling but the anesthesiologist team was right on it. It was mentioned that I was partly dehydrated from not being able to eat or drink anything prior to the surgery, which most likey caused this to happen. Michelle...talk to you doctor about your concerns and hopefully she can prepare and advise you for any discomforts. Good luck.

I just had a c-section on 12/16. Right before had started he put something in my i.v. It was supose to relax me. That is what made me feel "high" but after @ 10 min it wore off. Then 30 min later my son was born.
