Hi! I am a first-time mom due in October. I hear a lot about cord blood banking, but really don't know too much about it to make a decision. I had asked my doctor, but I feel like he has no time to sit with me and basically just told me to call the company (viacord) and threw me a few pamphlets. I am the type of person that needs things explained to me in laments terms - if things start getting too technical, I start to feel "uninterested" - I am a "get to the point" type of person. I'd like to hear from someone who has done this before...what do I need to do, who do I need to contact and when, what are the costs, etc. Any info. will be helpful. Also, my husband and I do not have any of the diseases that cord blood can help, but I still would like to do it. I feel that I'd rather be safe than sorry. The cost I heard was approx. $2,000 - is this correct? It is a bit much, but if something happens to my baby down the line that the cord blood may have helped, it will cost more than the $2,000 that could have saved our child!!! Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know anyone who has done it and we might have to donate instead of storing due to finances. I do know that stem cells procedures are being done outside of the US already. My cousin had stem cells from her hip put into her pancreas as a cure to diabetes just this month. This is why I am so interested in looking into this. We are due in March. It is amazing what can be done. I really wish that we could afford to keep the cord..but if by donating it I can save someone's live then I feel like we are doing the right thing.
