I have heard you are not suppose to eat deli meats, so does that also mean not to eat Quizzno's subs because they cut their own meats?

I think you just need to eat them in moderation and they say that if you steam the deli meat then it will most likely get rid of any bacteria... cus let me tell you honey ive been eating so many bologna sandwiches lately and i just found this out. lol.....i am craving lots of deli meat, too..

I think we're not supposed to eat processed meat because it could contain toxoplasmosis which is very harmful to the baby. Steaming it or cooking is probably best, but my doctor says you can continue buying it from same places you used to pre-preg since their meat is obviously clean.

I like the deli meats too. I believe it has more to do with the preservative "sodium nitrite" that makes those foods bad for us. (toxoplasmosis comes from cat feces,not deli meat). But yeah, moderation is the key. Use just a slice or two per sandwich (and don't forget the cheese, lettuce, and lots and lots of mayonnaise)

You seem to buy your sandwiches already made, but another option is to freeze your meat...that will kill off bacterias as well. I always stock up on lunch meat when it is on sale and freeze it then take it out as I need it. Freeze it in bags of a couple days use each. One warning though, roast beef doesnt freeze well.

Dlei meats can be contaminated with Lysteria, a bacteria. If you heat them until steaming that will kill the bacteria. Lysteria grows well at temperatures such as your refridegerator is set at and also at room temperature. It can cause premature labor & even stillbirth. Usually, you becom einfected with it & you really don't realize it, our adult bodies can handle a little bacteria, you get diarhea if anythings. And it can take between 7 and 20 days before you see any symptoms at all. the March of Dimes website has some good info on it & why to avoid. I would say if you are having sandwiches from a place like Quiznos or Subway you are O.k... because their business survives on deli meats, those types of businesses usually take great care to see that their meats don't become contaminated. I also know a lot of women who have eaten deli meats through their entire pregnancies & see nothing wrong with it. It's really up to you if you feel comfortable then keep on eating them, or eat hot subs instead. But definitely make an informed decision, do some of you own research on it - don't just take all of our opinions.

"Do not eat hot dogs, luncheon meats or deli meats unless they are properly reheated: Eating out at certain restaurants that provide deli meat sandwiches such as Subway is NOT recommended for pregnant women since they do not reheat their deli meats. Therefore Subway recommends that pregnant women eat the following non-luncheon meat items such as meatball, steak & cheese, roasted chicken, seafood & crab and tuna (limit 2 servings a week)."
This, of course, does not ban these foods, it just says to reheat them until steaming. Not doing so will put your baby at risk.
