Hello everybody....I am Meena
I just registered today.Looking at this forums really appreciate you guys helping out each other so much!
I am 6 weeks pregnant and I am overweight .I am really scared to put on lot of weight during pregnancy. Here is my diet ..I have 1 glass of milk with 1 teaspoon sugar in the morning at 8am ,an hr later a couple of whole grain bread slices with butter and at around 10.30am 1 fruit(apple/orange/banana), 11.30am I have a bowl of salad(baby spinach, brocolli, radish ,letuce etc no dressing) and lunch at 12.30pm .Lunch includes a bowl of yogurt we eat whole wheat bread and vegetables generally I cook my veggies in 1 teaspoon of oil). Then at 3pm I again have a fruit,at 4.30 pm a bowl of milk and oatmeal and dinner similar to lunch with rice. Our lunch and dinners include whole wheat bread, lots of veggies and lentils.I drink lot of water and walk for atleast 45mins everyday .Do you guys feel I am eating well?or am I eating too much??And also I would like to ask if I am eating well and exercising is it also possible for me to loose weight during pregnancy by following this diet and exercise?

that sounds like a healthey diet to me. you're definately not eatting too much. if anything i'd say eat more. make sure you're taking your prenatals and if you're hungry outside of your regularly scheduled meals, eat. also, be careful not to exercise too hard...you don't want to hurt the baby.

Sounds good with all the veggies lentils and grains. I would stay away from eating too many dairy things as they are high in fat and low in fiber. They also block calcium absorption. You also need a source of omega 3 fatty acids for brain development--walnuts and flax seeds will give it to you.

I've never heard of someone saying not to consume dairy because it blocks calcium absorption. Is this true? Because isn't dairy mostly calcium...aka milk, cheese, yoghurt? If you take in fortified dairy, that means that there is vitamin D with it which helps absorb the calcium, which you are to increase your consumption of these products while you are pregnant. If you choose 1% or skim milk vs 2% or homo, it has the same calcium and nutrients but with way less fat. It is very very important to get your calcium while you are pregnant. Not necessarily for the baby, because it will find it from other sources within your body, but will deprive you of your calcium which you need for your strong bones later in life. Just my suggestion to you Meena. Good luck with everything!!

my only comment is, aside from the lentils, where is the protein???? you are going to need 60-80 grams of protein towards the 2nd/ 3rd trimesters.

Meena, if you have any questions whatsoever about your diet, I would recommend that you visit with a nutritionist. They are very qualified to examine your diet and give you pointers on what you need to modify. Ask your health care provider. Each person is different in their dietary needs and it never hurts to be safe.
