Sodium Nitrates Logical Question

I have heard that pregnant women shouldn't consume any foods preserved with sodium nitrate (deli meats, sausages, pepperoni, etc.) because it's a carcinogen. However, wouldn't this chemical be bad for anyone? Or is there a distinct vulnerability for pregnant women and their unborn children? Can anyone shed some light on this. Thanks. :-)

Well, I think it's just worse for the unborn child due to their vunerability/size. It is bad for everyone but it's in a lot of foods. I believe it is also in breakfast sausage and bacon. It's hard to stay clear of all of it.
