Before I found out I was pregnant I'd drink coffee, tea and cocoa on a regular... I understand cutting out most of that but I need some kind of warm drink I can have on a daily basis. Does anyone have suggestions for warm drinks?

You can drink decaf coffee. I think it's just the caffeine in coffee, tea & cocoa that they don't want you to have

Decaf coffee, decaf tea, and decaf hot cocoa are all okay. It will say on the packaging that's it's caffeine free.

My doc actually gave me the okay to have 2 cups of coffee each morning. he ky is everything in moderation. I know they said you should also stay away from diet drinks as well, due to the aspertame and other artificial sweetners.

Herbal tea is great as long as it doesn't have licorice in it. Sleepytime tea by Celestial Seasonings is great at night. Herbal teas with ginger help with morning sickness and aid digestion. My dr. also said that 2 caffeine drinks per day are fine.

Uh oh, I didn't know that about the diet drinks. I am 5 wks and since I found out I bought a bunch of diet/caffine free sprites and cokes. Why is the aspertame bad? What about artificial sweeteners?

Aspertame may cause cancer according to Dr. Andrew Weil, author of Spontaneous Healing, 8 Weeks To Optimum Health, etc. Artificial sweetners in general are bad for you because they are artificial. Sugar is natural and better for you. You can get some good tasting natural sodas that do not have artificial sweetners at Whole Foods or try a health food store.

I didn't know about licorice.....I'm 10 weeks and I crave black licorice at least 3 times a day. What is wrong with licorice?

I've heard of the aspartame thing before. I think that it had the study parameters of feeding the mice dose upon dose of it and yes it did cause cancer. My doc said that everything in moderation is key. I personally drink crystal light sometimes, not a lot, but some and it has aspartame in it.

My doctor said 8 ounces of coffee a day is fine (two small cups) but I still stay away as much as possible. Hot chocolate only has the TINY tiniest bit of caffine in it, as does all chocolate, but its perfectly fine do drink daily. Try making it with milk. It's really rich that way and it'll help you get the calcium you need, not to mention it tastes really good!

Decaf coffee is not good for you... the decaffeination process uses formaldehyde, and there's a residual in the resulting beverage. Of course formaldehyde is toxic, if I were to choose between it and caffiene..I'd go for the caffiene.

You should look for decaf which is made using the swiss water process which is chemical free. This coffee can be ordered online. A safe artificial sweetner is Stevia which can be ordered online from America. It is not available here but is used in Japan to sweeten their diet coke etc and is not a synthetic neuro toxin like aspartame etc.

Actually, the cool thing about Stevia is that it is NOT artificial - it is an herb extract, made from a natural plant that is actually sweeter than sugar. Because it is made from a plant, it has NO calories, and it also contains fiber (good for every pregnancy diet). You can buy stevia in any good health food store. And Sandy T, you are right, it has been used for many many years in Japan and other countries with no ill effect.

There is a study that found that women who ingested large amounts of caffeine (equivalent to 8 cups of coffee per day) had a 60% higher chance of miscarriage compared to women who ingested no caffeine. A cup or two of regular coffee, BLACK tea or cocoa is fine, just steer clear of herbal teas as they often contain things that can adversely affect your pregnancy. The best tea I have found is straight peppermint (read ingredients to make sure that is the only thing in it) as it soothes morning sickness and tastes great sweetened or not.
