It doesn't matter if it's a reputable place or not. We've been going to the most expensive Japanese Restaurant in Boston for at least 5 years. Just 2 months ago, my husband got food poisoning from the raw shrimp and was violently ill. He had a feeling when eating the raw fish that the preparer did not properly wash the fish but that since nothing happenned over 5 years it was safe. It turned out that the preparer was new and it's probably best to not take the risk with sushi during pregnancy. I've been carving it too.

Is it true I can't have any seafood at all while I'm pregnant? It bothers me when I'm eating and everybody looks at me and tells me what I can't have... It makes me feel as if I'm a bad mother

Brucen, I live in Japan and you're full of it! I LOVE sushi (and it's much higher quality here, by the way). I have asked every one of my female Japanese students about whether they have ever been told not to eat sushi when pregnant, and they all look at me like I'm crazy. They think that's nuts! But a lot of people think that's the only think Japanese people eat and it's totally not. They eat it MAYBE once a week, most not even that often. I agree with most posters that as long as you are buying it fresh from a reputable restaurant (not some cheap hole-in-the-wall), then it's absolutely FINE, even beneficial!

How many times are we going to see the same question!!! You can eat sushi ONLY if it is COOKED!!!!

It is not true that you get listeria from sushi, you can get food poisoning which does not cross the placenta like listeria. Also SOFT CHEESE DOES NOT cause listeria if it is pasteurized, check the label, almost all cheese in America is made with pasteurized milk. Why they have to scare everyone is beyond me.

I have been eating sushi for years. My doctor is asian and he says moderation is key. Also. know the restaurant. I will only have sushi at places I have been many times. Salmon is very benefical. I have asian friends and they have all eaten all types of fish, raw and cooked. They have produced beautiful children, and a couple happen to have IQ's higher than most on this message board. Do your homework and trust your own judgement.

Is it fine to eat lobster during pregnancy?

Ok after careful review I will say it is far healthier eating whole natural foods! Which sushi can be. I red someone ate american cheese over the whole natural kind!yuck we really need to consider what is healthy. Proccessed full of perservitive foods are not healthy I dont care how much calcium it says it has.Whole and natural are always better. Although every thing in slight moderation, that is considered unhealthy.

This whole blog has been based on opinions. Everyone's opinions differ. If you really want answers to your questions...call you OB/GYN. That's what they're there for. There is NO question that is too small or too "stupid". They're used to women calling about little "inane" things regarding their pregnancy. Don't take others opinions as fact. People are stupid and believe what they want to. CALL YOUR OB/GYN!!!

I happen to be a birth doula. As a doula we must understand nutrition for the pregnant mom. Honestly to suggest asking an OB about such matters is interesting considering a lot of them do not take an extended course in nutrition. However I am not saying to cram done the raw stuff. We must realize we are what we eat. If you go and type in pregnancy diet into google you will see many forms. We now know that a high protien(fish, eggs, beans, chicken)ect. and complex carbs taken with large amounts of fresh veggies and good fruit are the best diets for pregnancy. Basically a whole foods diet. If we want a good pregnancy and birth we will eat this way. Oh just a bonus 80 ozs of water is also a recommend.

Wow, this is an interesting thread... so many strong opinions. I have to say that a lot of the doctors I know personally do not know much about nutrition. My primary rule of thumb for food (before and during pregnancy) is moderation and eating mostly whole foods and organic foods. That means staying away from all the prepackaged junk that is out there (including products with corn and corn syrup- most corn is genetically modified and the seed companies really haven't done long term testing on gmo products. Also corn is just a filler - that's what they feed cattle to get them fat!). I also look for hormone-free dairy products (they will usually say rBGH-free). And I'll probably lay off the uncooked meats during pregnancy, but that is just my preference. I have a farm and I've done a lot of research about how food is grown in this country and I think that everyone should be more informed about what they eat. Just my two cents! (check out http://www.organicconsumers.org/ for more information)

I totally agree with knowing what you are eating!!!!!! whole and organic is best. Those pregnancy cravings can be diffulcult sometimes when you are trying to eat healthy.

The chances of getting listeriosis from sushi is pretty rare to begin with, but according to the CDC and USDA "Hormonal changes during pregnancy have an effect on the mother s immune system that lead to an increased susceptibility to listeriosis in the mother. According to the CDC, pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get listeriosis. In fact, about one-third of listeriosis cases happen during pregnancy. Listeriosis can be transmitted to the fetus through the placenta even if the mother is not showing signs of illness. This can lead to premature delivery, miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious health problems for her newborn." Read that again. *20 times* more likely while pregnant. And, yes, you can get listeriosis from raw fish.
