I had 1/2 of a half of a relatively rare roast beef sandwich today without even thinking (someone ordered at work), and Im freaking out about listeria now! If you cant tell, this is my firat pregnancy, and Im almost 4months...Ive done everything by the book thus far, and am so dissappointed with the fact that I didnt pick up on what I was eating today. Please help...whats the risk from the little amount I did ingest???

I'm not too sure about the risk of eating kind of rare roast beef, but I'm sure that you are fine since you ate such a small piece. If you have an upset stomach, diarrhea or something like that your doc can do a blood test to see if you came in contact with listeria and if you did there is about a 2 month window during which your doctor can give you medicine to protect your little bean.

Chances are good that you are fine. If you are worried about it you can always ask your doctor for a blood test to check for the organism. While listeriosis is a worry for pregnant women and somewhat common you can usually make sure you are safe from it by heating any meat, especially processed meat, until it is steaming hot. Rare roast beef is actually pretty safe as the bacteria can usually only survive on the surface and are killed off during cooking. The interior of the meat is an anaerobic environment and bacteria cannot survive there. I would just make sure not to eat any cold meat after this! Good luck!
