I know constipation is a widely discussed topic (!!) but being my first pregnancy and a bit of a worrier, I am concerned about the intensity of the pain it is causing. Everything has been checked out and is 'fine', but it REALLY hurts and just does not feel right. Would love to hear from people regarding this. Anyone else experience such pain - it hurts to sit, lie, go to the toilet....................................etc! I am 22 weeks.

I had this at around 22 weeks and had BAD constipation - I went to the hospital and they did an enema on me and I felt alot better!!!! BUT I did have alot of ligament pain around my belly and I still thought that was constipation pain but it wasn't. So, is this really just constipation or is it ligament pain too? The doc said to rest and drink lots and lots of water for the ligament pain and eventually it will go away. It's important to not do any lifting as well.

Thanks for the reply. I also had an enema and was sent home and the pain has been worse since then. I am doing all the right things and am actually going to the toilet, just not as much as usual. What does ligiment pain feel like?? At the moment, it really hurts when I am walking, when I bend forward, when I go to the toilet, when I turn in my sleep, when I am sitting, and when I go to stand up. The pain feels like it is just above the top of the pubic bone, and is constant. It's a very sharp, almost crippling pain. The ultra sound I had was 'clear'. Would appreciate some help. All the doctors can tell me is what it is not! Thanks heaps.

Yep! Sounds like ligament pain to me. Your round ligaments are all around the sides and bottom of your uterus and when they are growing and stretching they are very sensitive...I remember one day just standing up from a sitting position and it felt like a knife in my lower belly! Ouch! I cried and thought something was wrong! I thought it was a bowel problem or something....well, I went to emergency and they said some people have bad round ligament pain and some do not. Doc said to not lift anything and to rest alot on my left side and drink lots of water....he said if the pain subsides when you're lying down it's another sign that it's the round ligaments that are hurting. He said to take Tylenol if it's very painful. The pain went away in a few weeks after the ligaments were stretched more and I guess tougher. BUT if still in doubt and it's very very painful it wouldn't hurt to go and see about it. Good luck and keep me posted.

Thanks again. I have had more wind today and it seems to spasm and hurt before the wind makes an exit, so I am wondering if it is constipation! I am also wondering if I was irritated by the emema too as it has been worse since then. It's been really good to hear from you as I think there is a bit of both going on. It's also good to know some sort of a time frame in regards to how long the pain lasted. Cheers.

There are gas drops you can buy that might ease your discomfort some. They're for infants, but they have a dosage for adults, and they work.

Ta. Do they actually stop the gas or make it less painful? I am not sure that I want to reduce the gas, as although painful, it seems to make things seem less blocked up. Out of interest too, is there anyone out there who has been constipated and found it painful when they actually go to the toilet? The pain goes from above the pubic bone, around and up the right side of the uterus, feeling very similar to ovulation pain. Also, does anyone know if things like 'Coloxyl' (Docusate) and 'Actilax' (Lactulose Solution) can actually irritate the bowel? These were both given to me by the hospital. Things have also been more painful since the enema - also given to me in hospital....................

Mrs SandraD. I am still trying to work this one out. Can you tell me if this pain was worse when you first got out of bed? Also, when baby kicked down low? It is also only on one side......

Try stool softeners. Your Dr. should be able to give you a prescription for ones that are safe to take. There are also mild laxitives that are safe to take if you don't want to have an enema again.
