I have terrible pain under the right rib cage going into the right side of my back. Had my gallbladder checked. All came back normal. It hurts most after eating. I think its heartburn related. I had acid reflux before pregnancy and the pain gets much worse after I eat. I think its a combo of the baby pushing up and the food that causes my pain.

Hi everyone,
I am just so glad to hear that other people are having this right sided rib pain as well. Not that i am happy you all are in pain, but everyone i have talked to about it don't really seem to know why it's happening so early, i am only 20 weeks, but it started atleast two months ago. i too have tried everything and have just come to the conclusion that i just have to live with it! I find not wearing a bra helps, however then you have the added problem of sagging b___sts postpartum!!

I am 34 weeks and have had rib pain on both sides almost my entire pregnancy. I can't sit down for longer than an hour and I'm getting too tired to stand up as I get further along. I also cannot lie down on my left side because I start feeling even more pain under my left rib (like I'm pinching a nerve or something). Lying on my right side is my only option when I sleep. I have found that walking really helps...Tylenol does not. Other than that, I'm going crazy!

I have had the same problem with allof my pregnancies. I always thought that it had to do with a car accident that I was in when I was six months pregnant with my first child. The head rest went right into my stomach and I have had the pain in the same area for each of my pregnancies. I have had three all together. Now I am starting to think differently after reading what you ladies have written.

I have also had pain below my ribs on both sides, but it has been much worse on the right side. This is just something to think about, but I have heard that your right kidney becomes inflamed during pregnancy and the pressure from your growing uterus can make it painful. I have had recurrent kidney stones before and during this pregnancy, and my urologist told me that it's fairly common for women to feel more pain on the right side as opposed to the left, mainly due to the right kidney and other organs getting squished. Like someone else advised in a previous post, I would definitely recommend getting to the doctor or ER if the pain is unbearable....Kidney stones and kidney infections are not something that you want to try and "tough out" at home!

I too am going through the same thing right now, for me it is in my left ribs. They are rather swollen, and they hurt all the time. I can lay down, sit, stand up, lean to the side, it doesn't matter, the pain does not go away.

The pain under your right rib area might be an inflamed intercostal nerve. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt like I ripped a muscle there. Then, off and on it hurt and I got pain in my right back area too. My OB checked for gallstones and that wasn't it. Then several months later I started to get numbness under my rib cage and it occurred to me that it could be a nerve problem. I looked up intercostal nerve problems and, sure enough, all the symptoms many of us are describing are explained by your intercostal nerve being inflamed and it can be pregnancy induced. There's not much that can be done since it typically is the result of the rib cage needing adjustment by a chiropractor and that seems pretty pointless when the growing uterus is just going to keep pushing it out of adjustment and pushing things on the nerve. My pain would get worse in the evenings as everything pushed up more on my ribs and the sharp pain under my right rib area typically occured if I moved wrong or sneezed. Although it occasionally occured for what seemed to be for no reason. It's much different than the kind of pain you get later on in your pregnancy from the uterus actually hitting your ribs or from the baby wedging up there. Those are painful too. However, if you are getting it before the uterus or baby can actually touch the rib, my guess is that there's an inflamed intercostal nerve that's caused by everything in your body shifting itself to accommodate the growing uterus. The pain and symptoms are very similar to gallstones so it doesn't hurt to ask an OB to rule out this problem first.

I am 9 weeks pregnant and have severe lower back pains, which stops me from sleeping properly. Is getting a back ma__sage at my stage allowed?

I am 24 weeks pregnant and by dr. told me today that the pain I feel in the ribs is normal. I don't remember what she called it.

I'm in my 4th week and I had a really warm sensation in my abdomen and upper thigh area. Is that normal? This is my first pregnancy, so I overreact to everything. Help!!!

I'm 31 weeks. This is my one and ONLY pregnancy complaint, ACUTE pain below my RIGHT b___st, along my ribs. On a scale of 1-10 it's an 8, only because I get tiny moments of relief. It intensifies with sitting up and walking. Is only soothed by sitting with my lower back arched, supported by a folded pillow. Otherwise no other discomforts. It's got to be an organ of some sort, we all seem to have it on the right only. By the way, I do not have a gall bladder, so I can rule that out. It's AWFULLY painful for being "normal/OK."

I also feel sharp distinct pain in my right side of my ribs. It doesn't feel like a foot but, there is alot of pressure and sometimes makes me short of breath. This is my second pregnancy and I never experienced this at all with my first. Is there anything at all that will ease the pain or will it just continue to get worse?

I'm now almost 38 weeks, and that rib pain never left. I know now it's feet kicking them. I see them all the time. It doesn't go away, but it's my only real ailment, so I've learned to cope with it. :)
