My six month old son is nursed every 2-3 hours , so i was happy when the doctor gave us the " go ahead " for cereal & stage one baby food . Here's the problem ....my son refuses to even eat one spoonful !! I've tried several times now over the last two weeks . He spits it out .....gags ..... cries ....i feel so bad. Should i keep trying or just keep nursing only ? I have to go back to work and fear that he'll starve !!! if he doesn't eat baby food . He also REFUSES to take the bottle . He plays with it but won't drink from it . HELP !! Thanks !!

Just keep trying. Never heard of a baby doing that. Try preparing baby food yourself. My daughter never liked baby food....so I would make my own baby food and she ate it better. Bottles....make sure you use a bottle that is more like the real nipple. Try the playtex nurser ones. They are great and no air to get the baby ga__sy. Good luck!

give him (2 to 4 oz. of formula) or nurse him just enought to "wet his whistle" then he wont be starving when you try to give him a solid and he might eat solids better this way it worked with my daughter

You can thin the cereal more than it says on the box, and you can mix it with b___stmilk so that it has a familiar flavor. The first month or so that I was feeding my daughter solids she spat out much more than she ate. She never really liked cereal, but she would eat it when I mixed it with apple juice.

Thanks for the suggestions, i will try them. When is it safe to give a baby apple juice ?

He should be ok with four oz. a day for 3-5 days to a__sure he isnt allergic but make sure that you arent giving him a new food at the same time in case of an allergy

I stopped nursing at 5 months. For a week he refused the bottle. I read that another person other than the mother should give the bottle. If you give it then the infant will naturally prefer your b___st but if a nother person gives it then they have no b___st to choose from. My son refused and cried , was biting the nipple and playing but was so hungry he figured I better try to suck to get food and satisfy his hunger. Since then anyone can bottle feed him. Wneh he tastes cereal it tastes so much better than the formula. I wait till he is really hungry and then he really wants to eat. When I first introduced rice cereal it was digusting to him and would have goose bumps and shivers in the beginning, but then he would get used to it and he would end up finishing it and wanting more!

Try mixing some gerber peaches for infants with a little bit of rice cereal. Make sure its warm. This is what we did with ours and he gobbled it right up.

It is normal for your baby to gag ond spit out food in the beginning it is a reflex. Try just focusing on getting him to tase a small bit from your finger when you are eatting you food It is not always about the taste of the food but the texture make it as runny and lump free as possible. At six months some babys will drink from a cup that has a teat like spout try something like that. Just put a small amount in it to start with and let him play with it after each feed, if using b___st milk in it he will proberbly take to it quicker. Also It helps to get another person to feed him, he sees you as his b___st milk feeder only, he can smell it on you and can not understand why he should take it from a bottle or a bowl. When starting to wean feed your son milk first , then offer a small amount of food afterwards as he gets better at eatting you can swap over.

It worked ! Thanks you guys . I fed my son some rice cereal with applesauce mixed in and warmed it up . He wasn't doing flips but he did eat it . I also made it kind of soupy . Now, only problem is he missed his feeding (nursing ) before bed ! lol ...i guess i'll have to pump . Thanks again .

Mix cereal into the baby food and force him to eat it, I know you feel bad but no babies want to eat baby food at first. It took me like 10 trys to make my son eat it after a while they just give in. It's new to them and they dont know how to eat it, your the mother you make the rules and you are doing whats right for your baby, Good eatinmg habits start now, just keep trying your little angel will get it.

I disagree with Cyndi. I don't think you should ever force-feed your baby. My daughter also did not like cereal so I would try it out one day and if it was a no-go I would wait a couple of days and try again. She came around after a couple of weeks and eats like a champ now. There are some days where she doesn't eat so much, the odd one where doesn't eat at all. I'm still b___stfeeding so I just try to make up the difference in "b___b juice" lol I figure I don't always have the greatest appet_te either so why would my daughter be any different? She's very healthy and happy and that's what matters. FYI she's almost seven months and she eats around 3 tbsp of cereal (oatmeal, rice or barley) and 1/3 jar of veggies in the morning, half a jar of fruit for lunch and the same as breakfast for dinner. Sometimes she eats it all sometimes not, I let her decide. Just be patient, he'll come around eventually. Btw at first my daughter would only take a bottle from anyone but me but now she takes it from me too. Are you giving him expressed milk or formula? My daughter WILL NOT take formula. You should see her little face screw up in disgust!! It's too funny! As far as the apple juice is concerned he should be old enough now. I water the hell out of it (2ozs juice with 4-6 ozs water) so she only gets a taste of it. Apparently juice is not as healthy for them as we once thought... just like everything else...

I was relieved to see that someone else has this issue. My 7 month old will not eat one spoonful of food or take a bottle either. I am extremely, extremely worried. We have taken him to a speech pathologist who has recommended exercises but nothing is working. If anyone else is out there who has beaten this, I would love to hear from you.
