I'm scared to bring my 2 month baby outside. What can I do? He already has got bit on his forehead (all the rest of him was covered!) I'm worried because triple E and West Nile have been found in my state and some schools aren't even letting the kids out for recess.

KH, first use a mosquito net while in the stroller. Most strollers come with one, but if not, baby supply stores have them. As a repellent, the ones that are citronella based are considered safe for an infant. i.e: Bug Off Oil Bug Repellent, and "Beat It" are both herbal based. They don't last as long as Deet, but they work OK.

Actually my better half just reminded me that "beat it" is the one we use because eucalyptus oil lasts much longer than citronella. So Eucalyptus beats citronella :-)

One more thing... don't spray any repellent directly on the infant skin, but instead put it on the clothes, or around them. Even Eucalyptus is not recommended for children under 3 yo! We spray around the stroller or on the infant carrier.

Where do you live Karen? We live in NYC and the mosquitos are not only a big pain, but dangerous too. Indoors I found out they hate the AC so we crank it up and bundle up..... outdoors is a challenge and my daughter LOVES going to the park. She may grow up to be a tree-hugger :-)

I'm in Northern, Ma__sachusetts. There have been 2 deaths this year so far here. I know that's not a lot but it still scares me. I'm in wood city here and we have so many insects and wildlife. I actually had a hurt hummingbird in my yard that I transported 45 mins away to get saved. Anyway, I watched a mother on the news explain the death of her 5 yr. old and I felt sick thinking of that happening to my kid. She said that she told her all her favorite memories, read all her fav. stories and sang her fav. songs knowing that she was going to die. Just can't imagine that!

Ma__sachusetts, NJ, and FL have the highest incidences I think.....

We had deaths here too in previous years. The mosquito season should be over soon..... maybe mid-October, maybe sooner for you.

Hi KH - I am in Southern NH and have a 2 week old - I can understand your fear. We even had a case in our town and the town next door... SO scary. The mosquitos go away with the first frost. That shouldn't be too much longer. I don't take the baby out after dusk...
