Eye Exam For Babies

Ok, I know I have read in several magazines and online that you should take your baby after 6 months in to get an eye exam. My daughters Dr disagrees and says it is not necessary. Has anyone here had their babies eyes examined at such an early age? I cant even figure out how they would test their eyes. If you have, can you tell me what they did and was it comfortable for the baby?

I would say your dr is right . The only reason you would take the baby early is because your dr recommended it in the first place.

What kind of question is this? Why would you take an infant in for an eye exam? No, you dont need to do that.

Well actually it was a good thing I brought my daughter in for an eye exam at 1 year. Well first I brought her to a eye doc due to a clog tear duct, and they said as long as your here wanna do an eye exam, we did and found she was significantly farsighted. Which all babies are born farsighted, she just never grew out of it. She has had gla__ses since she was 1. Her vision is getting better, with gla__ses she sees 20/40 and without she sees 20/70! I was really upset when I found out she needed gla__ses and a bit in disbelieve. I mean how can they do an eye exam that consist of looking at stuffed animals and pictures to a 1 year old, they gave me a booklet, Why does my child need gla__ses and it helped. Now keeping the gla__ses on a 1 year old, that was a different story. Aubrey is now 8 and wears gla__ses, the cool ones of course, She likes to pick her own, this time she got a pair of purple shimmery ones. Also when she was a baby I never noticed her having any problems, I mean she picked up her toys, cheerios ect just fine, and has always been right on if not more developementally(sp?) So my advise for anyone questioning the sight f their baby, go have them checked out, The sooner the better as far as the eye sight being corrected! Good Luck!

I am not sure when we will have Amaya's eyes checked, but I do know that bad vision is hereditary (sp) I havent even asked my doctor about taking her, but YOU are the mommy and I would do what I think is best. I would just maybe take her the next time you go to the eye doc and talk to them about getting her checked. Good luck! By they way, how is Jadyn doing? I know that you were having some tests ran about a month ago and I dont remember reading about how they came out. Good luck with they eye thing!

In My case it was not hereditary...

Thanks everybody. I will go in the next 2 months for me so I will ask my Dr. There is no reason for me to think there is anything wrong with her vision because she seems fine, I just read a few places that you should get them checked to catch anything early....... Stephanie, Jadyn is doing great, thanks for asking. All her tests came back negative and the Dr says it is something she will just have to outgrow. She takes Miralax daily and that seems to help alot and since she is starting on cereal, hopefully we wont need that much longer either!! :-)

Good, I am so glad that she is ok. Have you started baby food yet? We did carrots for the first week, I think we are starting peas next week. She doesnt really like the carrots but neither do I! Anyway, I am very happy that everything came back normal. Do you know how Aja is doing? How did his tests come back?

My mother had my eyes checked when I was a baby because I was walking into walls. I started wearing gla__ses when I was a little over a year old. I was thinking I would get Nathan's eyes checked when he is about a year old.

Im suppose to let her do cereal for 2-3 weeks and as long as she does good, I can start her on stage 1 foods but Im too excited, I probably will next week. I have not heard anything back on Aja. I updated a post to E a few weeks ago asking how everything turned out but didnt get a response so not sure if she saw it. I really hope everything is ok!

Hey just to let you know, Stage 1 and Stage 2 foods are exactly the same when it comes to plain vegies (greenbeans, peas, carrots, sweetpotatoes, etc) Our ped. told us that it is all marketing so she suggested we go ahead with stage 2 foods. The only difference is the amount you get, she said the way it is made is exactly the same but they put stage 1 foods in smaller bottles so you have to buy more. I read in babytalk magazine yesterday that all babies can now recieve a free eye exam in their first year of life because of a program called InfantSEE. You call call either 888-396-3937 to find an optometrist near you or go to www.InfantSEE.org

My daughter recieved one at a 6 months appt... my hubby had taken her, i wasnt there.. they hook up sensors to her head and let her watch some images, and record brain respones... probably similar to the tests for hearing at birth... SHe pa__sed with flyinig colors... they do this to catch a problem as early as possible. My insurance covered it fully, so why not? One more thing im not worried about!
