Food Allergy

Has anyone dealt with food allergies? My son has been going to a new babysitter for about 2 months now. In that 2 months he's had a bad cough, diaper rash, some wheezing 3 times. He pooped 7 times yesterday. I've tried the food eliminating thing but I think she gives him stuff without my knowledge. I am starting to look for a new babysitter because I think she is lying to me about what she feeds him. I know at one time she was giving him graham crackers and pretzel rods. (I think he just sucks on the pretzel rod). He's 8 months old. Am I crazy? Could it be that he's just around other little kids now and they share germs? I just think it's weird to go 6 months with no cough / sickness to this. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You are not crazy. Most graham crackers have honey, a major allergen for children under one year of age. Let us know what happens.

Yes, graham cracker have honey. No honey allowed till one year. Doesn't the baby sitter know the kinds of foods to avoid during the first year and why(strawberries, kiwi, honey, dairy, peanuts, chocoalte, egg white). Did she ever consider to think that your child may get a serious anaphylactic shock ie. such as peanuts. Then what. Whom ever you get stress this from the beginning.

The problem with honey is the chance of bochulism, not allergy. That is why you are not supposed to give it to babies under the age of 1. As for allergies, the most common are dairy(which is in practically everything), eggs, and wheat. You can do an elimination diet. Keep in mind that it takes 3-4 weeks for dairy to fully leave the body. Even if you don't find any allergies, you can use allergies as an excuse to get daycare providers to provide the types of food you want your child to eat. Pack your own foods to take to daycare. Start your instructions with "The soctor said..." Sadly, doctors and allergies tend to motivate people more than mother's wishes. You might also want to look into environmental allergins such as dust, mold, and chemical cleanres. These types of things along with dairy are common in causing respritory problems. Good luck to you.

Interesting... I always thought it was a major allergen for youngsters under age one. It turns out that a honey allergy is a rare occurance. Sorry for the misinformation. About the Yo-Baby I was giving Aja -- he also poops a ton when he eats it so I have discontinued it. It causes loose stools and I wonder if your sitter is also feeding him something like that? It could be germs bc it's that time of year, but if you do not trust her, and she has already shown you that she cannot be trusted, I would look for a new one myself.

Oh no!! Kiwi is bad? I've been giving my 9 month old some kiwi!! What could happen??

The kiwi allergy is usually related to laytex allergy, as are bananas. Laytex allergy is more common than most people know, and it is c_mulative. The more you are exposed to it, the more allergic you become. That is why the allergy shows up a lot in nurses (laytex gloves) and why some hospitals and doctor's offices are going laytex-free. Even if you aren't allergic to it at first you can become allergic from exposure. Although peanuts are also a common allergin, daycare providers should know not to feed them to toddlers because of choking (popcorn too).

I'm allergic to kiwi, but not to latex. When I eat kiwi my lips start bleeding a lot. Not all graham crackers have honey, they either have honey or cinnamon usually. If your son wasn't going to a babysitter before, and all of this has started since, it might be the exposure to other kids. My first daughter got sick every time we went to the pediatrician's office. She got sick other times too, though, because my husband was working in a kids' hospital and I guess he was bringing home germs. If the sitter has a furry pet, that could also be the problem. I had asthma until I was 23...then I got rid of my cat, and once we moved to a place where I'd never had a furry pet I quit having asthma attacks.

My son loves kiwi if it is sweet. I have a book called The Vegetarian Baby and they seem to be very lax about when you can start your baby on certain foods.

I think that you should really find a babysitter that you could trust. That feeling of being away from child not trusting the person taking care of them is horrible. You would probably not be able to productive at work. Also, anyone who does not respect the parents wishes should not be allowed to watch children. Side bar... I agee with the laytex allergy thing. I have been an infant and toddler teacher for about 5 yrs and I am seriously allergic to Laytex. Why? Because in order to change diapers or feed the baby b___stmilk I have to wear Laytex gloves. I think that the overuse really made me allergic.
