My Baby S Sleeping Habit

My 8 week old only sleeps two hours at a time during the night. Then he takes a bottle and goes right back to sleep (thankfully). Two hours later, like clockwork, he is hungry again. He only drinks 2-3 oz at a time no matter how patient I am. Is this normal? Last night I almost fell asleep on my feet while heating up his bottle! Help - will it ever get better?

Has he always slept like that, or is this new in the last few days? Some baby's go through a growth spurt around the 2nd month and need extra food at that time. I would guess he will settle into a longer sleeping pattern within a week or two. Try to humor him, give him a binkie, rock him in a cradle, etc... to try and get him to wait a little longer between feedings.

Unfortunately, he has been doing this all along and I have been waiting for him to get better. Today he is 8 weeks and I figured he would be sleeping longer by now...

Lucas did exactly that for the first 5 weeks. I got no rest whatsoever. Then we had to change his formula due to him being allergic to the one he was on and start adding cereal due to acid reflux. That is when he started going 4-5 hours between feeding at night. We usually go to bed at 9:30pm, and he gets up anywhere between 1:30 and 2:30. A lot of times he is up then about 3 hours later to eat. My son was a grazer too, where he never took more than 2-3 oz and he spread the bottle out and never slept more than one hour to 2 hours so I know how you feel. He is now 10 weeks. I believe it was the cereal that helped Lucas, I believe babies should start cereal by about 2 mos, but most doctors and most mothers have other beliefs, so you will have to use your own judgement on that one. But it will get better. My son will not take naps during the day at all except for a few tiny 20 min or 30 min cat naps. And God forbid you try to put him in his crib, he will not have anything to do with that. Hopefully it gets better soon! He still does not go longer than than 3 hours between bottles during the day.

my baby did the same thing until she was 3 month i started to give her cereal in her bottle just a little bit but it worked like a charm she started to sleep through the night and we were both happy. i know some people have mixed opinions about the cereal in the bottle i was one of them but when i saw it worked for me and her i was very happy.

I know people have some strong opinions about the cereal... We did try it last night and the poor guy was horrified at the taste of it. It was rice cereal and we put just a bit in the bottle. We ended up with a crying jag for about an hour-and-a-half. Maybe I will try to re-introduce it in a week or so. I know what you mean, Rachael, my son will have nothing to do with his crib. Although, I won the battle the other day when I had him in his car seat IN the crib for a nap. Baby steps....

KrisD, that is so funny!! Lucas sleeps with us at night and will only nap in his swing during the day. He knows exactly what he is doing too, he clutches my pjs at night with both hands to let me know I am not going anywhere, he has me right where he wants me. Maybe one day!

My son has alway been the same way. He is five months old now and does a little better. I was so excited a couple of days ago because I got four hours of sleep before he was awake again. I don't want to say your son will be the same way. Hopefully not. I think the sleepless nights so far have been the hardest thing about being a new mommy.

Rachael, Billy was sleeping with us, too! A few nights I even kicked my husband out in the middle of the night! He was so upset that he insisted we get him OUT of the bed the very next night! It was horrible, it is so much easier to plop him in the bed. Now we have to get awfully creative trying to get him to sleep. Last night he slept in the pack-and-play. You wouldn't mind but he has a gorgeous crib and ba__sinet! If only we knew what the babies would be like BEFORE we went out and spent all the money! Our bedroom looks like the romper room now!
