Zack is having a slight fever after having his 2 month shots. Being a worryward as he is my first, I am CONSTANTLY checking his temperature . I have learnt from the baby class to check with a digital thermometer at the underarm. However, this time the nurse have advised me to check it in the rectal. I find this difficult as Zack would fuss from being stripped bottom half and the thought of jabbing it in there makes me squirm as I know I won't like it either. I would prefer the underarm method but if the best way is at the rectal, then I guess I'll have to suck it up and do it. Any opinion on this? How do you take your baby's temperature?

I usually take the armpit temp first. If it is higher than normal I'll do a rectal temp. This is how you do it: put the baby face down on your lap, open the diaper (leave it covering the front) and just insert the thermometer a little ways, half an inch to an inch. Some people use vaseline, but I use ky jelly. It's not fun, but you can do it if you have to.

The temporal thermometer is supposed to be as accurate as rectal. I have one and I LOVE it!

I have been taking his temperature at the armpits 3 times. When I get 3 very different numbers and he's quite hot to the touch, I took it at the rectal. However, it's been over 8 hours and Zack's fever is gone. I know some day I'll have to do this again. Thanks for the tips!

I take it rectal - never had a problem with it - nor my baby. My own mother did it like that with me and it never bothered me - never thought she was doing something weird....I know my husband has some issues with it though. I prefer it that way because it is the most accurate.
