To Pacify Or Not To Pacify

I was just wondering what you all thought about pacifiers. My dh and I were against them before Matthew was born, but we've since caved. Matt's doctor told us that he has a very strong need to suck, and that it wont hurt anything. They say you can take away a pacifier, but you can't take away his thumb. I'm just worried that eventually he'll decide he needs it ALL the time. Also, my lactation consultant told me that Matt has a lousy suck and that a pacifier will help him improve that. (He has no trouble going back and forth between the br___t and the bottle, so I'm not worried about nipple confusion).

I can only get Lucas to use a paci occasionally. He is just over colic, and I believe they work really well. I actually wish my son would take one regularly, as he has a hard time self soothing. There are no indications that they cause any problems, and babies do need to suck to soothe themselves. Myself, I am for them.

I think they are ok when they are used for the child and not for the parent. As long as you are sure that the baby is just needing to suck and that you've attended to as many of his needs as possible, why not? My son won't take one, but he's mostly outgrown the need to suck and has replaced it with the need to chew on his teething rings! (and on my knuckles ha ha ha)

I love them!! Sorry, but I do. My son was born wanting to suck all the time. When he was in the hospital he sucked on his tounge. I gave him a pacifier bc I knew that by time he found his hands he will be sucking on his thumb. Seeing a baby suck on their thumb is cute, but then you have to think how NOT cute it is when they are 6,9 or ever 15. Those thumbs are surely hard to take away. BTW, don't worry about him needing it all the time. Don't use it when he is playing or crying bc he wants to eat and you *should* be fine.

I keep hearing and reading that pacifiers reduce the incidence of SIDS. Ben will only take one occa__sionally and he can't seem to keep it in his mouth for too long. He's kind of a paci-retard. :)
