My almost 11wk son's belly button is still not healed. When the stump fell off it looked like it was doing fine but then a ball of pink flesh emerged. Inside the "hole" you could see his skin for the belly button and then the ball of flesh. When he went for his 2 mo appt. the doctor put some stuff on it that kind of burned and made it shrink. She told me to wait 7-10 days and if it came back I needed to come in and have another treatment. Well, it came back. I did a search on the web and found out that this is called Umbilical Granuloma. I have a degree in Child Development and been a infant and toddler teacher for over 5 yrs and never experienced this before. Has anyone of you been through this and if so how long did it take for your baby to heal? Any information would help. It is very unnerving to see this "hole" in my babies stomach. My heart breaks everytime that I see it.

My daughter did not have this problem, but at 3 1/2 weeks her umbilical stump had still not fell off. I took her in the the doc and they put the same stuff that burned it. It was barely hanging there after 4 1/2 weeks so I had to take her back in. They went ahead and took it off for her and I had to go back one more time after that and they had to burn the hole closed. I would go back in if I were you and have it done again. I know that some people have to put silver nitrate on their baby's umbillical cords to make them come off and heal correctly. You could either get a second opinion or take him back to the same doc and have them do it again.
