Depressed Husband

I have had depression and took meds for it one time for six months about three years ago. It was the best thing I could have done for myself at the time. My bf (who is now my dh,) therapist and doctor were all very supportive. So many people take meds for this kind of stuff now, it really is not a big deal, athough I remember being really resistant to taking meds for a long time before I did. I thought that I should be able to get bettert on my own. As for hus employer, they work should not know about it unless he tells them, as it is his private health info to which they are not allowed access unless your dh gives permission for them have access. Anyway, ask him if he'd be open to trying counseling first. They could figure out if he needs meds or if talk therapy would be enough. Does his employer provide an Employee a__sistance Program with counseling? That would be a good start, but if he wants to keep it away from work, then he should ask his doctor for a referal to a therapist. I hope he gets some professional help and it is great you are being supportive of him. Just let him talk to you and keep being a good listener. Good luck!

Jbear, I have been treated for depression (currently too) and my Dr. is fabulous. My husband also is treated for depression and he goes to my Dr. too. Since you are in the same town as me I would be happy to refer you to the Dr. Just let me know if you are interested. I never had any job related problems during treatment, in fact most of my coworkers were also on meds for depression. (Could be why I'm not there anymore!!!!) I feel the meds work wonders. I can really see a difference being off of them. My husband went through the same thing after the birth of our first son. It was really really bad. Once he got on meds everything improved drastically. He has been okay this time, but he is stresed and overwhelmed with the thought of having to provide for another person. It's alot for one person to be responsible for. Good luck and let me know if you want the name of my Dr. I think they take pretty much all insurance plans. We have Aetna and they take that.

Sonya, I would like the name of the doctor. It would be great to be able to tell my husband someone had recommended the doctor...he has united and I was looking at their list, but it's so hard to just pick one from the list.

Jbear, I am so glad you responded. I kept checking back to see... glad to hear from you. The Dr.'s name is Nasha Holt (female). She is part of the Universal City Family Medical Clinic on Pat Booker Road. Their phone number is 659-4425. There are two other Dr.'s there as well, Dr. Naik (equally as good but hard to understand) and Dr. Park (a little old, not my favorite). I was also afraid of being told to just get over it and pull yourself up by your bootstraps, but Dr. Holt takes depression very seriously. She will handle it directly without referring out to a "Shrink" (at least she did with me) unless the meds don't work. It took several tries to find the right med for me. Good Luck....

Thanks, Sonya, I really appreciate it. That's in our part of town too.
