So Scared I Called Posion Controll

I woke up this morning and was watching my 15 month old daughter in her crib and noticed that she was playing with something in her hands so i get up and go into her room and freaked out!! She ripped the top of her diaper open and had all that gel in EVERYWHERE in her hair on her face all over the crib. I had no idea if she ate it or not so i called posion controll and they said that its harmless (its the material that they make gel tabs with) but it is a choking hazard (o that makes me feel better) So no more diaper-to-bed for this little chicky. On the better side i called pampers and they are sending me coupons for a free mega box of diapers.

Bless your heart! That had to be scary! But kudos on the free diapers!

You'd think with technology the way it is today that they'd make a diaper that kids can't get out of! I'm glad she's ok!

Hannah - how scary! I'm so glad they told you it was safe but I was worried. The absorbant gel in diapers is made of sodium polyacrylate - you might want to google it and find out if this is something you should mention to your doctor. I read this on a first aid page about treatment: "First Aid: Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention. Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately. Skin: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse. Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Give large quant_ties of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately. here's the link if you're interested, remove any dashes: http://www.camd.lsu.edu/msds/s/sodium_polyacrylate.htm#Health

Yikes! Are you going to put her in cloth at night, or what?

Rabbits07 - May 4

I had a nephew that used to do that and my SIL had to put duct tape on the straddle of his diaper to keep him from picking it out...you could trail him all the way through the house until she started using duct tape. Not exactly attractive, but it worked!

Alycia - May 4

Duct tape - what a great idea! I'm going to have to remember that one...

I am so happy for you that things were not more serious!!!!! Children can be little escape artists and you never know what they will do next......your story I think will help some of us as I am sure this happens more often than you'd think.......when mine was newly born I used pampers swaddlers and they were defunct in some way cause that gel stuff was on my baby everytime I took the diaper off to change him....turned out all the diapers in this particular bag were like that.........has'nt happened since but......I don't use pampers anymore either.......

i called the posion controll center and they told me that it is no way harmful to eat. (just a little gross if you think about it!!) The gel is the same gel that they make gel tabs with, and put in some make up. After i called pampers i called poison controll just to be safe. I went to the store today and bought "training pants" they look like bloomers that come with a dress but they have absorbant patches (they are like cloth pull ups) so im going to have to put those over her diapers so that she wont mess with them. The other day she got the diaper off, which i can live with, i just never thought that she would rip the diaper apart and rub the stuff all over her body!!

Hi Hannah - oh i see. So this is a different gel than the little gel b___s that a baby sometimes gets on their little heiny from the diaper?

HannahBaby - May 4

No its the same gel, Like i said the posion controll said its a choking hazard, thats all. They said by law diaper companies arent allowed to put anything toxic or harmful into the diaper for when things like this do happen. I didnt call my DR because posion controll knows a heck of alot more than my dr.

HannahBaby - May 4

Also hon i dont think that is what they put in diapers......It says when handleing the product "Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective gear" I definatly dont think this is the same product

Does your baby sleep in just a diaper?? Mine always has a sleeper on so I don't think hewould be able to get to the diaper! I did have it once that when I zipped his pj's open the diaper had "exploded" and his whole side, tummy and back was covered in that nasty gel and pee!! First thing I did was giving him a bath. Happy to know your little one is fine.

Hi Hannah: well you're probably right about the poison control people - they would know what's dangerous and what's not. But actually, sodium polyacrylate IS the super absorbant polymer that is put in diapers, and it does become gel-like when wet. If you do a quick search of "sodium polyacrylate in diapers" it will pull up all kinds of stuff. It just doesn't sound like the kind of thing you want your baby playing with from what I've read. But I'm glad everything is fine and it sounds like duct tape might be a good solution!

I did go to the web site that you posted and it may be the same thing, but maybe in a different form, The website said to wear full protective gear and a breathing apparatus when coming in contact with the substance......I dont think they would be putting something like that in baby diapers. I put her to bed in a night gown and she just pulled it up, its not like i cut the diaper open and gave it to her. Posion Controll said that it was totally harmless so i really think that the website that you recommended is about something else. I got diaper covers for her to wear to bed at night along with her night gowns. Thanks for the info anyway

HannahBaby - May 5

Kim, i did go online and enter what you told me to on google and what i found was pretty scary. LIke i said i dont know if she ate any (prolly not cause one website said that 5 grams can kill a baby) There was alot of sites that were saying how bad it is for baby, and then there was other sites telling people to cut open diapers add water, and have fun playing with the stuff!! I dont know all i do know is that i most certainly wont put her to bed with just a diaper on again. Also, it said that they stuff can cause perineum bleeding (which my daughter had) and a staph infection (which my daughter had as well) Its a scary thought. They also put that junk in maxi pads and used to put them in tampons until it was linked to TSS in the 1980s. I wish i could afford the "green" diapers but they are so dang expencive and my husband wont do the cloth, so there no point in that either. Do you use cloth diapers??

Kim L - May 5

Hey Hannah: I know it gets so hard to sort through all the information - I actually was quite surprised also to read in some places about how dangerous it is and others that describe cutting open diapers for science experiments! I had read about the link to TSS. Pretty scary! But I'm sure for the millions of babies that wear disposable diapers, most of them are totally fine. You can make yourself sick with worry trying to prevent any bad thing from ever happening! My little one actually isn't here yet, but after convincing my husband with the most brilliant argument ever (cost a___lysis - ha!) we've decided we're going to try cloth (FuzziBunz). They are not the prefold kind of the stone ages - they're pocket diapers, which are the most like disposable in terms of their ease of use. It sounds like you've got it covered though with a diaper cover. I doubt your little escape artist will do it again! ;-)
