my sister said she didnt feel anypain at all...they give you a numbing shot...then after that she said it felt like they ran their finger up her spine...hope the same is true for you

i have 4 children including 7 month old twin boys, all natural births just gas and air, tried to have an epidural with my eldest son but it didnt work and ended up with a very nasty and tramatic labour, my daughters and my twins birth were both fantastic, natural pain killers and lovely gas and air, i could move around if i wanted and most importantly i could feel what was happening, sounds silly but your body tells you when baby is ready to be born, when to push etc if you have an epidural you dont feel zip and you may end up feeling like you have been kicked in the back for a few wks after the birth, not what you need with a little baby to care for !my advice is try for an natural labour but if it gets too much and your not coping then have an epidural, but dont be pushed into it by well meaning family or lazy doctors! good luck x

Well i got to the hospital and was already 10 cm dilated (it was my first child so i stayed home and went through the contraction pain because i didnt know when i should go to the hopital) My water broke so i ended up going to the hopital. The contractions are pretty bad. Its no where as painful as getting an epidural. i went through 2 contractions while i was getting my epidural so i guess that took my mind off of the shots. But i would say to go as long as you can before getting the epidural. Dont give in as soon as it starts to hurt. I went all the way to 10 cm. Yea the contractions hurt but i am proud of myself for being strong enough to go through all that.

i dont understand why you had an epidural at 10 cm? thats fully dilated! in my local hospital they would not of given an epidural at such a late stage, in fact they decrease the anesthetic so mum can use the contractions to push, minimizing risks of tearing or prolonged second stage labour. did you mean to put 10 cm?

Wait, you stayed HOME til 10cm? I thought once you were at 10cm, the baby was coming out. And also what Polly g said... once you are at 10cm, the hard part is over, so why would you get an epidural then?

Actually, I believe most doctors won't give you an epidural after I think its 7 cm. At 10 cm there's really no reason to get one, the worst part is over, its just the pushing after that. Anyways, I had horrible back labor with my first and I got an epidural. I wanted a all natural birth, only the IV pain meds, no episiotomy, or anything. It was very painful and the epidural really helped me. Don't feel bad for getting one, do what you think is best! And about it hurting...let me just say that it hurts a lot less than the contractions!

When you are in that much pain, you will try anything and while the epidural procedure may be scary it does not hurt anything like contractions do. why suffer when there are perfectly safe options for pain! get the epidural!!

Miriam - May 3

Its actually not perfectly safe and can make labor longer, more difficult, and with more complications.

Hello, I could not imagine not have gotten the epidural, for me, when I was having the contractions that is when they did it, and I did not feel a thing, all I felt was the pain from the contractions....
