I know that after you have the baby, there is afterbirth. Does this hurt coming out? How gross is it really? Do you need to push it out like your baby? Also, does it come out immediatly after the baby or does it take a few minutes? Thanks:)!

I was holding my baby when I feintly remember the midwife saying to push, but I have no recollection of the sensation at all. I had an epidural though and a spinal block so if you were doing it with different types of pain relief, or none at all then it would be different.

Oh and further to above, remember that you have already stretched for the baby to come out, and the afterbirth is very small in comparison, so it would be nowhere as near as painful as the birth may be. The pushing for me was the same as having the baby (short quick pushes), and it was only probably a couple of minutes afterwards - maybe 1-2.

I have never found that it hurt coming out. yes they will tell you to give a little push, but remember its nothing compared to a baby and it usually is about 5-15 mins later

Just like Channy I had an epidural so I didn't feel nothing and I didn't even have to push...the doc. just tugged on it and it came out. Let me tell you, the thing that hurt me was when they were st_tching me b/c I tore and my epidural was wearing off and he was getting closer and closer to the top where there is not that much skin....oh man, I cried! That was the only time I was in pain was when he was st_tching me. I didn't even feel nothing when I was in labor.

the postings are right about the afterbirth, you really don't feel it and it happens fairly quickly, but one thing I was wondering about if you asked that question about the afterbirth, is do you know about afterpains? I didn't until my second baby. It's the uterus contracting back in and it hurts like labour pains for me. Don't know if all women get them, usually they say it's worse with subsequent babies, but I don't know if this is your first. Only hot hot hot water bottles and rocking back and forth while the meds kicked in when it was too bad helped. I was b___stfeeding at the time, but needed just a dose to get me over the worst. Don't last long, maybe a day or two. Just thought you should know about everything after the baby is born, in case. Good luck..

It doesn't hurt, I had an epidural--it literally slid out with one halfhearted push. I didn't see it, but apparently it sat in a bucket in the floor while my doc st_tched me up, because my husband made the mistake of looking in the bucket! He said it was pretty gross and that was after watching me push out his son!
