Pain Meds Other Than An Epidural

With my first i was in very painful labor for 10 hours, but only had 30 mins of pushing. I had planned on getting an epidural the whole time but i ended up dilating from 4-10 in only 15 minutes so i had to have her naturally without anything for pain. I am expecting my second in July, adn I'd like to say i want to do it again, but am not sure if i will be able to say no when the time comes that i am offered an epidural. I am wondering what other forms of pain meds others have used other than an epidural, and how well they have worked for you?

I had all 3 like you without any med. and I am due in May and I am planning to do it natural. This ii the best and healthiest way. One thing I know that my sister took the IV, and that made her drowsy, but she said it really helped her. As for me, the faster I can get the baby out, the better it is. Epidural slows the labor, and at labor who wants it longer! If there was a med. that would help that's not harmful and doesn't slow the labor. I would take it!!!!!!!!! If there is I would love to know my self. All the best to you!

Yes they do! Be sure to ask your nurse when you arrive to the hospital what options you have available other than the epi. There are other meds that can be given, they won't take the pain away like the epi, but they can take the edge off.

i don't agree that epidurals slow labor. i was in active labor for 7 hours and had an epidural and i was dilating 2cm per hour. i was given stadol for back spasms i was having before my water was broken, but that didn't really help that much with the contractions. my baby came out fine and the epidural was a blessing considering i got 4th degree tears. and i had no trouble pushing. she was a 10lb7oz baby lol.
