Well if you want a waterbirth at home, unless you have a really deep and wide tub, you'll want either a big kiddie pool or they sell birth tubs that are portable. A lot of midwives have a kit that you purchase from them for the homebirth, but I'm not sure what they have in them. I am having a birth at a birthing center with my midwife. I could have a homebirth if I want to but I'd rather use their facilities. As for bleeding afterwards, it'll be like a really heavy period for a while so have good maxi pads (no tampons). Also you'll need a big bowl for the placenta. If you want to birth in a bed, I would recommend plastic sheets or get an air mattress you won't mind throwing away when you're done. These are just things off the top of my head. The best thing would be to find a midwife and ask. They are usually very friendly and willing to answer any questions you have. Homebirths are awesome! And talking to midwives early gives you the luxury of finding someone you really click with so you aren't pressured to finding one once you are pregnant.

I chose a home birth for #2. My first was an awful, intimidating, and intervened hospital birth. So, congrats on being brave to do #1 at home. I am so happy we decided to do so. It was a beautiful, healthy experience for all of us. There was hardly a mess. I was in our bathtub about 20 minutes after the birth and then in the comfort of my own bed. Where are you from?

Yay! I'm so excited to see someone who's motivated to have a homebirth! I had both of my kids at home, and I wouldn't do it any other way (unless there were problems of course.) But like Sarah said (funny that's my daughter's name) just call around to midwives in your area, and interview them. I don't think it's too early at all! I've already been starting that process myself, (4 months ago actually) and I'm not even pregnant yet (haven't been trying till now.) I really recommend finding someone you're really comfortable with even BEFORE you get pregnant so you can get to know them and be with them throughout your entire pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and post-partum stages. I've done it both ways, and honestly it was stressful not having the same midwife throughout one of my pregnancies. So yeah, I think it's awesome that you're making the decision to go natural and have a homebirth! YAY!!
